Mexico has put a prohibitory tariff on American beef as a retaliatory measure for high tariff placed by this country on Mexican articles sold here. The United States placed such a high tariff tax upon German productions that the Germans retaliated by excluding American pork from her markets, and the result was an immediate decline in the price of pork in this country, greatly to the damage of the farmers MexicOj as a measure of self j protection, is forced to adopt the same policy in regard to American beef, which decreases, of necessity, the demand and reduees the price of tl at staple production of the American farm and cattle ranch. Thus the policy of the high tariff advocates returns to plague those engaged in agricultural pursuits m this country. When will the protectionists learn that a policy that destroys our foreign markets is suicidal, espicialiy when we have an ehormous surplus of both beef and pork. The farmer’s interests has very few, if any advocates among the protectionists and every step they take in restricting commerce, has proven a feloms stab at the best interests of those who till the soil and live by the sweat of their faces.

The history of John Gross, who was found dead in his cell in the Monticello Jail last Fri day, having committed *uicide by hanging, is a peculiar one, John and nis wife were married in Russia ten years ago, and emigrated to South Bend. Seven years ago there was a separation, John removing to white county. Last spring there was a reconciliation, but in the interim two children had been bom to Mrs. Gross, one of whom was three years old, and the younger a mere infant. In June the intant died, and its death was proven to be a murder, both parents being tried for the crime, the jury convicting John but acquitting the mother. Thursday tne court overruled a motion fora new trial, and Gross hanged himself rather than be imprisoned lo? life.
