A Mystery Solved. Tor several years boatmen and others along the Susquehanna river, between the villages of Susquehanna and Red Rock, have been interested, not to say disturbed, by a creature in the water at the latter puint The strange animal has always made its appearance at night, and an unearthly, weird noise accompanied by heavy splashing often r wakened the people from their slumbers. Early sundown a dark object has frequently been seen moving slowly across the river, and boat after boat has been upset by it It was killed recently and proved to be a big alligator. It is supposed to have escaped from its owners years ago. The creature weighed over 500 pounds, and it took half the population of the neighborhood to kill it
James W. Douthit, Esq., will occupy the room back of the Rensselaer Bank, Nowels bui’ding, after the Ist October with his law oflice. H<&v Long to Sleep. Up to the 15th year most young people require ten hours, and till the 20th year nine hours. After that age everyone finds out how much he or she requires, though, as a general rule, at least six or eight hours are necessary. Eight hours’ sleep will prevent more nervous derangements in women than any medicine will ever cure. During growth there must be ample sleep if the brain is to develop to its full extent, and the more nervous, excitable, or precocious a child is, the longer sleep should it get if its intellectual progress is not to come to a premature standstill or its life cut short at an early age.

They have no tails, and are able, by lack of that appendage, to imitate rabbits and get them in their clutches. They are great catchers, and as such are valuable beyond all other cats in Australia. They have been introduced into this country, but whether for their hunting propensities or not is not stated. The cat family has never been utilized by man as it might be. Rat and mice catchers can also be developed into good hunters In many other directions.

Mexico has put a prohibitory tariff on American beef as a retaliatory measure for high tariff placed by this country on Mexican articles sold here. The United States placed such a high tariff tax upon German productions that the Germans retaliated by excluding American pork from her markets, and the result was an immediate decline in the price of pork in this country, greatly to the damage of the farmers MexicOj as a measure of self j protection, is forced to adopt the same policy in regard to American beef, which decreases, of necessity, the demand and reduees the price of tl at staple production of the American farm and cattle ranch. Thus the policy of the high tariff advocates returns to plague those engaged in agricultural pursuits m this country. When will the protectionists learn that a policy that destroys our foreign markets is suicidal, espicialiy when we have an ehormous surplus of both beef and pork. The farmer’s interests has very few, if any advocates among the protectionists and every step they take in restricting commerce, has proven a feloms stab at the best interests of those who till the soil and live by the sweat of their faces.
The history of John Gross, who was found dead in his cell in the Monticello Jail last Fri day, having committed *uicide by hanging, is a peculiar one, John and nis wife were married in Russia ten years ago, and emigrated to South Bend. Seven years ago there was a separation, John removing to white county. Last spring there was a reconciliation, but in the interim two children had been bom to Mrs. Gross, one of whom was three years old, and the younger a mere infant. In June the intant died, and its death was proven to be a murder, both parents being tried for the crime, the jury convicting John but acquitting the mother. Thursday tne court overruled a motion fora new trial, and Gross hanged himself rather than be imprisoned lo? life.
