Can a Horse Speak?

The prosecutor in a horse-stealing case heard at the Surry Sessions recently declared that a colt, his property, of which he had been robbed “spoke to him like” when he found it again. Tressed for an explanation he said that the colt “whinaied” and that, added the prosecutor, “was speaking to me as plain as anyhing not a Christian could.” But can a hOrse smile as well as speak?
