A Famous Battle-Ground.
On the banks of the Tippecanoe, a small trearn which enters the Wabash River in pdiana, was fought the terrific battle of fippecanoe. >n this great struggle of frontier times the allied western Indians, under the chieftain“hip of Elskwatawa, the "Prophet." were defeated in November, 1811, by the Americans under the command of Gen. Wm. H. Harrison, It was a desperate, hard fought battle, and much depended upon the result. Had the Indians been successful all barriers of defense for the early settlers would have been overthrown, and the deadly tomahawk would have been active in the rapid extermination of the remaining pioneers. On the other hand, the fortunate termination of the contest put an end to further attempts at open warfare by tho Indians. The rich territory, so long overrun by hostile savages, was thrown open for settlement. which rapidly occurred as soon as the news of the great victory became widespread. Naturally great praise was rendered to the success and intrepid bravery of Gen. Harrison, and be was honored in many ways. He afterward served as Commander of the Army of the Northwest, and when Indiana was admitted to statehood he was selected to represent thife State in the United States Senate. In 1840 he was elected President, and his unfprtunate demise occurred shortly alter being inaugurated. The forty-second anniversary of the Battle of Tippecanoe found the gallant grandson of "Old Tib” leading hi* forces to a great political victory, which resulted in the selection of Gen. Ben Harrison as President of the United States. The Harrisons have been a hardy race of men. sprung from old log-cabin stock, which is a sufficient guarantee of its genuineness wherever found. Realizing the truth of this, great effort has been made to rediscover sonffi of the secrets contained in the old log-cabin stock of useful articles, and, as the result, the famous Old Log Cabin Sarsaparilla, universally regarded as the best Spring tonic and blood cleanser, has been found. Not satisfied with the world-wide esteem which is held for Warner’s Safe Cure, the only cure for kidney diseases, the proprietor is willing to do all that is possible to establish Warner’s Log Cabin Sarsaparilla as foremost among household articles on account of its purity and effectiveness. After all, each individual has, at all times, the great battle of life or death to fight, and for security attention must necessarily be given to the best weapons which science can offer humanity in the great contest Tea and coffee are well termed “luxuries of the grocer kind.”

The Largest Cable.
One of the most remarkable engineering feats appears to have l>een achieved in China, in the face of extraordinary physical difficulties — namely, the successful stretching of a steel-wire cable of seven strands across the river Lunann, this feat having been accomplished by the Danish engineer Delinde, assisted only by unskilled native labor. The cable extends between two points, at a distance of nearxy 4,700 feet apart, the height of the first support being about 450 feet above the present level of the river, and the second about 740 feet. The cable in question is said to, be the longest in the world, with a single exception—namely, the cable across the Kistna, measuring some 5,070 feet. There are also two cables across the Ganges of 2,900 and 2,830 feet, respectively.
Rust Prevention.
Iron and steel are protected from oxidation by giving them a coating of magnetic oxide of iron. After much experimenting, M. de Meritens, the French electrician, has succeeded in effecting this more satisfactorily than by the methods now in use, which requires eight or ten days for steel, and gives only imperfect results for iron. He places the article in a bath of pure water at a temperature of about 175 degrees, and passes through it an electric current a little more than sufficient to decompose water. In a few hours all sorts of iron or steel receive a brilliant black and very hard coating of magnetic oxide, which takes a fine polish.
Tipping the Hat.
The custom of lifting the hat had its origin during the age of chivalry, when it was customary for knights never to appear in public except in full armor. It became a custom, however, for a knight, upon entering an assembly of friends, to remove his helmet, signifying : “I am safe in the presence of my friends.” The age of chivalry passed away with the fifteenth century, but among the many acts of courtesy which can be traced back to its influence, none is more direct in its origin than that of lifting the hat to acknowledge the presence of a friend.
A Life Made Miserable
Dy dyspepsia, is scarcely worth the living. A capricious appetite, heartbum, puzzling nervous symptoms, increased action of the heart after eating, sinking in the abdomen between meals, and flatulence after, aro among the successive indicia ot this harassing complaint. Two things only are needful for its removal. A resort to Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters, and persistence in its use. These remedial measures being adopted, a cure is certain. Taken immediately' before or after meals, this great stomachic promotes secretion of the gastric juice, the natural solvent of the food. The nervous and bilious symptoms consequent upon chronic indigestion disappear, as the complaint gradually yields to the corrective and invigorating influence of the Bitters. Appetite returns, sleep becomes more refreshing, and as a sequence, the body is efficiently' nourished, muscular poWer increases, and the mind glows sanguine. Use the Bitters for chills and fever and rheumatism.
