Extraordinary License.

"It seems to me.* remarked one of our citizens the other day, “that physicians are allowed extraordinary license in the manner in which they juggle with the welfare patients." “Now. here is Dr. , who was attending Mr. up to the time of his death, and if he treated him for one thing he treated him for a dozen different disorders. First the doctor said pneumonia was the trouble; then it was consumption. Then the patient was dosed for heart trouble, and so on. until just before he died it was ascertained that disease of the kidneys was the real trouble, and that which had been at first treated as pneumonia, consumption, heart disease, etc., were but the symptoms of kidney disease. then it was too late. “This is only one case in a hundred, and lam beginning to lose faith in the doctors altogether. In fact. I haven’t hid any need for their services since I began to keep Warner’s Safe Cure in my house, a little over three years ago. Whenever I feel a little out of sorts I take a few doses of it, confident that the source of all disease is in the kidneys, which I know Warner’s Safe Cure, will keep in good order, and will eradicate any disease that may be lurking there. Had Mr. followed a similar course, I have no doubt he would be alive to-day; but. of course, all people don’t think alike. “One thing is certain, however, and that is the doctors are allowed a little too much freedom in the way they have of pretending to know that which they really know nothing about If they don’t know what is the real trouble with the patient, they should admit it and not go on and experiment at the cost of the patient’s life.” Bildad—Why don’t you buy a typewriter, Ormsby? Ormsby—My wife doesn’t understand type-writing, and if she did a fellow doesn’t care to have his wife around his office all the time. Bildad—Your wife wouldn’t have to run it. You could hire a girl for a small salary. Ormsby—As I said before, I don’t want my wife around the office all the time. One of Mrs. Malaprop’s daughters, a beautiful girl, had been sitting to a sculptor, and some one asked the lady what was being done. “Oh,” she replied, “my daughter is having a bust made of her hand.”

Odd that She Got Mad.

Charles W’hymper, the well-known engraver and animal painter of London, told the following story a few years ago: “I dined at Aiderman So-and-so’s last night, and as a mark of honor his eldest daughter was assigned to me to take dow nto dinner. She’s a bright girl, but the way she drops her h’s is enough to make a man’s hair turn gray. But I got along very nicely with her, and Lady Bletherington on the other side, until the ladies were on the eve of retiring to the drawing-room. The Aiderman had but recently moved out to Highgate, and I was talking about the beautiful scenery near the house, the views to be had from the windows, the fine air, and so on, w hen Miss suddenly said, ‘I think I get prettier every day, don’t you ?’ What could she mean ? I didn’t care to answer, so I said, ‘I beg pardon—what did you say ?’ ‘I raid I think I get prettier every day.’ There was no mistaking her words, so I said, ‘Yes, indeed, you get prettier, and no wonder, in such fresh air and ’ But just then she caught her mother’s eye, and with the other ladies she left the room. As she went out she looked over her shoulder - with such withering scorn in her eyes that I knew I had put my foot in it somehow - . Then it hashed upon me that I had misunderstood her; she had dropped an h; what she had said was not a silly compliment to herself—the sentence really was, ‘I think Highgate prettier every day.” Mr. Whymper was never invited to Aiderman So-and-so’s again.— San Francisco Argonaut.

A Terrible Misfortune.

It is a calamity of the direst kind to feel that ene’s physical energies are failing in the primp of life—to feel more nerveless, more dispirited, weaker every day. Yet this is the unhappy lot of hundreds who surround us. A source of renewed strength which science approves, in behalf of which multitudes of the debilitated have and are every day testifying, and which, in countless instances, has built up constitutions sapned by weakness and infirmity and long unbenefited by other means, surely comprehends itself to all who need a tonic. Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters is such a medicine—pure, botanic, soothing to the nerves, promotive of digestion and a iertilizer ot the blood. Dy-pepsia and nervousness—tne first a cause, the second a consequence of lack of stamina—depart when a course of the Bitters is tried. All forms of malarial disease, rheumatism, kidney and bladder trouble, constipation and biliousness are annihilated by this standard family medicine.

Extraordinary Hair.

In Brazil there is a tribe called i lie Cafnsos, which has sprung into exist ence by marriage between the lorg stiff-haired natives and the imported negro slaves. As might naturally be expected from the admixture of the e extremes, this people possess hair of a very extraordinary kind. It rises perpendicularly from the head in thick, curly masses, und forms a wig of such enormous dimensions- that the possessors must stoop low when entering their huts.
