A Lincoln Story.

Mr. Lincoln was an early settler in Sprinfield, 111., and used to tell some spicy stories about pioneer life in that locality. He said theie were at first in that flourishing town three regular orthodox churches: a Methodist, a Baptist, and a Presbyterian, and all were getting along swimmingly, when suddenly a Universalisi preacher made his appearance upon the scene, and held his meetings in the Court House. He was a young man of talent, and soon made such progress in winning people over to his view's as to alarm the regular ministers, who, in view of the danger, held a consultation and agreed to take turns in preaching the TJniversalist fellow dowm. It fell to the lot of the Methodist brother to open the war, and a large congregation assembled to hear what he had to say. He began his discourse in the usual off-hand way by announcing the moral condition of Springfield was good and that religion was prospering there; but of late there had come among them, in the guise of a preacher of the gospel, one who openly taught that there is no hell and that all men are to be saved. “But, my brethren,” said he, “let us hope for better things.”
