THE CAMPAIGN TEXT BOOK for 1888 is now ready, and will be furnished on application to the National Democratic Committee, lo West 29th St., New York City. Price sl. In quantities of five cr more 5o cents each. “We favor the entire repeal of the internal taxes (on whisky and tobacco) rather than the surrender of any part of our protective system.”—Chicago platform. “The platform is in entire harmony with my views.”—Ben Harrison. ■ “Unnecessary taxation is unjust taxation.”—President Cleveland in his letter of acceptance. “Trusts are private affairs with which President Cleveland and the people have no right to interfere.”—Blaine in the interest of “Trusts.” “Such combinations have always been condemned by the Democratic party. The declaration of its national convention is sincer ly made, an t no member of our party will be found excusing the existence or belittling the pernicious results of these devices to wrong the people. Under various names they have been punnished bv common law for hundreds of years; and they have lost none of their hateful features because they have assumed the name of ‘Trusts’ instead of ‘Conspiracies.’ We believe that these Trusts are the natural offspring of a market artificially restricted; that an inordinately high tariff, 1 esides furnishing the temptatiou for their existence, enlarges the limit within which they may operate against the people, and thus increases the extent of their power for wrong-
doing. With an unalterable ha- j tred for all such schemes, we count the cheeking of their baleful ope- ! rations among the good results promised by revenue reform.” — President Cleveland in his letter of acceptance. James A. Garfield. “In 1860 the burdens of national taxation were light. All our revenues, including loans, amounted to only $76,000,000. Our expenditures were $77,000,000, and our whole public debt but $65,000,000. In the year 1860 the tonnage of our ships upon the seas was 5,353,868 tons, which was more by 140,000 toii9 than in any other year of our history before or since. Twothirds of our imports were then carried in American bottoms, as were also more than two-thirds of our exports. Our exports that year reached the aggregate value of $400,000,000, which was forty-three and onehajf millions more than during any previous year. Our imports were $362,000,000, decidedly more ban any other year. And I make this statement on the authority of David A. Wells, that in 1860 we were exporting t@ foreign countries more American manufactures than in any other year of our history. * * * * v * Tho fact is, Mr. Chairman, the decade from 1850 to 1860 was one of peace and general prosperity. —Extracts from speech of James A. Garfield in the House March 6, 1878. Ihe cartoon in to-day’s Sentinel fairly talks. —« ♦» —— Ira W. To the Voters of the 30th Judicial Circuit
Gentlemen: At the Democratic convention held at Goodland, September 28th, I was selected as candidate for Prosecuting Attorney. The nomination for the position comes to me unsolicited, and coming as it does, so late in the progress of the campaign it is not a very desirable one. It should be a laudable ambition in every one who is put forward foi a place among t e servants of the people to make some effort for himself, and to strive for honorable preferment. Owing to the lack of time I shall be unable to make much of a canvass. The place for which I have been selected is not a political one. It has to do with the morals and peace of society rather than with the political policy of the Government The success or failure of attending the administration of the office depends upon the character and efficiency of the man chosen. While I make no claim for myself, it may not be out of place to say, that I have lived here, in Newton counto, since 1851, and whatever reputation .1 may have for business fairness, and as a lawyer and a citizen, is lipre among our people and a public examination of it could not be avoided were it desired. I ask a fair consideration of my candidacy from each of you, and shall most cheerfully accept your decision. Very Respectfully,
WILLIAM DARROCH.

THE TALLSYCAMMORE,’ at Rensselaer, Oct 24th-
Gov. Hill, of New York, will speak at Lafayett) on the 12tb. Letters of strong republicans have come to light which indicate that the leaders of that party are willing to purchase the number of votes that mav be required to secure them th.s Stai \ The public acts of a public man is public property, and his constituency have a perfect right to criticise and condemn the same without f eingjsubject to the abufie and threats ot the friends of the party censured. Mr. Owen sho’d feel himself under obligation for the opportunity afforded him to defend his Babb letter, even tho’ his attempted defense of it proved a failure. The Small Boy’s Revenge.
Arthur, who is forbidden to speak at the table, had his revenge the other day. As dinner began he was uneasy, but finally said: “Ma, can't I speak just one word?” “You know tbe rule, Arthur.” “Not one word?” “No, Arthur, not until your father finishes the paper.” Arther subsided until tbe paper was finished, when he was asked what he wished to say. “Oh nothing; only Nora put the custards outside the window to cool, and the cat has been eating them ur>.”

She Killed A Wildcat.
A lady living a few miles from Sanford, Ga., in the neighborhood of the Wekiva river, very narrowly escaped from being killed a day or two since by a wildcat, tbe animal having entered the house in search of something to eat. After a short struggle, in which the cat, the lady, and her husband were engaged, the bloodthirsty feline was killed by the lady breaking its back with a heavy garden rake.

Owing to recent prosecutions for sending postal cards containing notices of failure to pay indebtedness, none will be sent this year. I will send out collectors about Sept 16th, 1888. L B. Washburn, 52-3 t, Treasurer Jasper Co Gladstone's System of Working. One of the most strangely marked traits of Mr. Gladstone’s character is the method and exactitude which he brings to bear on his daily work, This is the great secret which enables him to get through an amount of labor which frightens ten ordinary men. It is owing to the possession of this quality that he is able, in tne midst of his arduous Parliamentary toil, to write articles, treating of such diverse subjects as the poems of Homer, the early Christian fathers, and modern theology. As a trifling instance of Mr. Gladstone’s curious habits of precision, it may be mentioned that be rarely opens a parcel without untying—not cutting—the string, priug it carefully up, and putting it away for future use in a drawer which is re served for the purpose. His papers and documents are also kept in scrupulous order by himself, so he can lay liis hands on any one of them at a moment’s notice. It is to his habit of doing so much of his work for himself that the mastery of detail, which Mr. Gladstone shows on every subject with which he grapples, is in a great measure due. Preserving Fish Alive. It is proposed to preserve fish alive by placing them in vessels partly filled with water and hermetically sealed. It is said that fish so confined have been found alive after three weeks without air or water having been changed, while fish in an open jar have died in forty-eight hours. If the air in the vessel is compressed the life of the fish. ijLstill further prolonged.
