Circulation of the Blood.

Before William Harvey discovered the circulation of the blood there was little known of its compounds or purpose. That there was such a fluid in the human system everybody knew, for it was made to flow by ruthless violence from the day that Cain tapped his brother on the head with a base-ball club. To spill blood was the chief occupation of the human race for many centuries, and he was considered the greatest man who succeeded in spilling the greatest quantity. In fact, few seemed to know that blood was designed for any other purpose except to spill. No one suspected that it had any circulation to speak of until Harvey made the discovery. He not only advertised its immense circulation, but swore to it before a Justice of the Peace, and this custom, originating with Harvey, has been copied by modern newspapers quite generally. Every well equipped and properly conducted newspaper employs a Harvey to swear to its circulation. — Texas Siftings.
