How to Preserve the Hair.

A young gentleman, whom -we never suspected of vanity, but whose evident tendency to baldness we have often deplored, asks us how to preserve the hair. He requests that our reply be strictly confidential ; but knowing the character of the post-mistress in his town, we prefer to run no risks, and accordingly answer in cold type. There are several well accredited methods of preserving the hair. Personally, we have tried' non*/ of them, but have kept record of those recommended by our baldest friends. To avoid any invidious distinction between them we submit the several njethods in alphabetical order: ' A —Arrogate no—authority in the household. B—Be in every night as early as a shutter can be procured. C —Carry up coal when requested. D—Don’t dictate. E—Eat what is set before you. F —Fix the fire before going to bed. G—Govern with W isdom the dog. H—Hold your tongue when addressed. I—lncline to instant obedience. J—Join nothing—except stovepipe. K—Keep off the carpet. L—Look sweet when lulling the baby. M—Make merry with the wood pile. N. —Never look a new bonnet in the bin. O—Ostracize yourself when the sewing circle meets? s P—Practice perfect patience. Q—Quash. every querulous complaint. R—Bender yourself scarce in housecleaning time. S—Spend and be spent for the Sisters of Timbuctoo and the Home for Incurable Hottentots. T—Tend door. U—Upset nothing. V—Vanish when callers come. ■ V—Watch the kerosene lamp and don’t let it smoke. X —Xplain when called upon. Y—Yearn for mother-in-law. Z—Zeus, remember, often and again gave in to Juno; and he had ambrosial locks.— Burling ton Free Presss.

A. Twenty Years’ Experience.

770 Broadway, New York, ) March 17, 1886. J I have been using Allcock’s Porous Plasters for 20 years, and found them one of the best of family medicines. Briefly summing up my experience, I say that when placed on the small of the back All cock’s Plasters fill the body with nervous energy, and thus cure fatigue, brain exhaustion,, debility, and kidney difficulties. For women and children I have found them invaluable. They never irritate the skin or cause the slightest pain, but cure sore throat, croupy coughs, colds, pains in side, back, or chest, indigestion, and bowel complaints.

The Earliest Dudes on Record.

The dude, the dandy, the macaroni, the blood, are modern inventions in literature, although not in real life. Although they have blossomed luxuriantly in all ages, they have left but slight impress upon the literature of the day, and such gleams as we get are but side lights. Perhaps the earliest dudes of whom we have any record are the Egyptian and Assyrian kings, who were prodigiously fond of carving their own portraits upon walls, dressed in the most elaborate man millinery of the period, and although the cuneiform and hieroglyphic records are scarcely literature, they serve to show how exceedingly fond Assurbanipal, Thothmes, and their congeners were of swelling themselves up in the public eyes— The Haberdasher.

Famous Women.

It is a significant fact that most of the women who have achieved fame in art, literature, or “affairs,” have enjoyed vigorous health. This shows that the mind is never capable of the severe and continued application necessary to creative work, unless tno body is at its best The woman who aspires to fill an exalted ■place among her associates must be free from nervous debility and female weaknesses. Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription will banish these, and it is warranted to restore those functional harmonies which are indispensable to health. As a speciti: for all those chronic weaknesses and ailments peculiar to women, it is unequalod. Now comes the time of the year when young men’s minds lightly turn to thoughts of loaf.— Philadelphia Call.

Great Little Men.

Some of the greatest men that ever lived were of small stature and insignificant appearance. The reader will readily recall m&ny instances. Very small are Dr, P.erce’s Purgative Pellets, but they are far more effective than the huge, old-fashioned pi Is which are so difficult to swallow and so harsh in their action. The “Pellets” are gentle and never cause constipation. For liver, stomach and bowel derangements they have no equal. The dude is the microbe of the human race.— Hotel Mail. To Protect Firemen.

A new helmet for firemen has been invented in Bremen. It consists principally of a copper mask, which is very light. The wearer’s nose, mouth and eyes receive through an India rubber tube a constant stream of pure air, which leaves the helmet by an opening opposite the eyes and prevents the entrance of smoke, The helmet has been practically tested and is to be used by the Berlin firemen, it is said. Mount Vesuvius serves as a gigantic barometer and thermometer for Naples.
