Memorial Observance.
All soldiers are invited to meet and act with Post 84, G. A. R., on Wednesday May 30, 1888, in the observance of Memorial day. The I. O. O. F., K. of P. and Sunday Schools are invited to participate in their several organizations. The W. R. C. and S. of V. will take their customary part, in the observance. This being a day sacred to the memory of those who gave all else that man holds dear that a government of the people, by the people, and for the people should not perish from the earth, it is desired that all people join in its fittir g observance; that flags be gen-e-ally displayed; and that places of business be closed during the inarch and exercises at the cemetry. The several organizations are requested to assemble at their usual places of meeting at 1 p. m. and at 1:30 upon the assembly being blown upon the bugle, to move to the court house square to places assigned by the grand marshal. At 1:40 theprocession’will be formed under the direction of the marshal and his aids and move by what shall at the time appear to be the best route to the cemetery. The exercises there will consist of the shortened services of the G. A. R. interspersed by songs led by the Presbyterian church choir, an oration by Col. W. C. L. Taylor of Lafayette, and the decoration of graves by the regular detail and by the W. R. C. The public generally are requested to follow in procession the organized bodies and vehicles to follow pedestrians. Occupants of carriages not following in procession but going in the same direction should show those on foot the very ordinary courtesy to drive on other or parallel streets. The W. R. C. is to collect and arrange the flowers in the forenoon, and citizens are requested to donate liberally thereto as the lateness of spring makes flowers scarce. Committee.
Carpenter Township Graduates.
uales. The graduating exercises of the Carpenter township schools, were held at the Hartman school house, last Saturday evening. The graduates and the subjects of their essays were, Grace Thompson, “The Use of Obstacles;” Alberta Green, “Value of Education;” Nannie Morrow, “Wisdom is Wealth;” Fannie Jones, “Government.” The essays were very commendible efforts, but further than that, there were no exercises worth mentioning. Boodle Elected Porter.—Albert G. Porter is probably the slickest and smoothest candidate the republicans ean put forward for the oilice of governor, and that empty honor will in all probability be given to him. His election in 1880, his party friends claim, marks him aa a vote-catcher of phenomenal power. The truth is there was no mystery attached to his election in 1880. The notorious corruption of the ballot by the republican party that marked that campaign is still fresh in the memory of our people. The $400,000 Sent into the state, and managed by Dorsey and Dudley, to corrupt the voters did its work effectually. But in this year of our lord, 1888, there is lacking the “boodle” necessary to republican success.— Anderson Democrat.
