THE STARS AND STRIPES.
The Story of Their Origin as Told by Sunset Cox in His New Book, There is one romance connecting America with the Orient and religion with patriotism Which should be recorded. It involves the “Star'Spangled Banner. ” I warn my readers that with this sedate subject of religion I am about to associate a patriotic incident. The Washington family has been traced back to the time of the Norman conquest and to the north of Humber. The princely see of Durham had a prelate who was a feudatory of the conqueror. He was a war-rior-priest and had many feudatories under him. Among the rest was the knightly William de Hertburn, who, in exchanging his village of Hertburn for the manor of Wessynton, gave not only the first recorded link in the family, but the immortal name of Washington—“farther west." The Ottoman dynasty had risen to a formidable power, and Richard the Lion-Hearted had pawned his patrimony for a crusade, and had been imprisoned on the shores of the Bosphorus ; the story of the Plantagenets •had been played before the world; stately and warlike scenes in the West and East had come and gone, and the name of De Wessynton, after illustrating many heroic qualities, had died out ifrom the chivalric rolls of Durham, but it was preserved in the cloister by ■a doughty abbot. The stock was divided into various branches. It was 'scattered over England. About the same time the great-grandson of the conqueror of Constantinople—Suleiman the Magnificent—had raised his realm to its acme of fame, one of the Washingtons, Laurence, was practicing law at Gray’s Inn. When the Sultan Ibrahim was trying to foil the intrigues of the eunuchs, Col. Henry Washington was defending the city of Worcester for King Charles against Cromwell. Happily for America, England became uncomfortable for the cavaliers who had fought for the Stuarts, and the brothers John and Andrew Washingtom emigrated to loyal old Virginia. John settled near the Potomac. His grandson Augustine was born there. There he lived, married, and died. Of his sons George was the eldest. But, as the genealogy shows, although he was out of the direct line, he had inherited the stamina of the stock. What of all this now and here ? There is another George Washington living at Constantinople. He is the Chaplain of the British Legation, and by no means mute, if not as glorious as his American namesake. He is in the direct line from the De Wessyntons of the conquest. In ibis keeping is the crest of the family. What is the romance to which I have Adverted? Nothing less than the incomparable growth of a great Western nation, directed, moderated, energized, and inspired by a descendant of the martial and priestly family whose stock is noted in the stalwart folk of Northumberland, and whose branches are as widely apart as the Bosphorus and the Potomac. Rev. George WashIngton is an accomplished gentleman ■and scholar. He is quite friendly to Americans, as, of course, he should be. I can not refrain from inserting here a little note which he sent to my wife. It contained his own card, and, doubtless, the arms on that card, as has been often surmised, if not proven, gave the first idea of the American “Star-Span-gled Banner:” Pera, Jan. 19, 1885. Dear Mrs. Cox: It might interest Mi - . Cox to see these quarterings of which I was speaking to you the other evening. You see the “stars and stripes” are them I have always heard that the story I mentioned to you was correct, viz.: That casting about for a flag when independence had been declared, the Americans thought that they conld not.do better than take their General’s family quarterings as a foundation. Hence the “stars and stripes.” With kind regards, believe me yours very truly, George Washington. The quarterings referred to are a shield with three stars at the top and stripes below running across the shield. Above the shield are the head and wings of an eagle, rising from a crown, and below it is the motto, “In cruce glorior.” Below all is the name, George Washington.
Things Are Not What They Seem.
“Who is the man with the ministerial look?” “That’s the sporting editor. ” “And that one that looks like a prizefighter?” “The religious editor.” “And that soleinn-looking individual?” “The funny man.” “And that jolly-looking fellow ?” “The obituary editor.”— Boston Co urier. ~
Home Rule.
Jonesr-“You seem to be discouraged, Pat.” Pat —“I am, sor, for it’s very little progress that home rule is making in old Oirland. ” “You shouldn’t lose hope, It is no easy matter to get home rule. Married men have been struggling for home rule for thousands of years, and they haven’t got it yet.”— Texas Siftings.
Queer Fits and Starts.
The fits and starts—using these words in their literal meaning—of the nervous people often strike the beholder as ludicrous. The nerves of hearing of such unfortunates are painfully acute, and impinged by abrupt, unexpected noises, lead them sometimes to perform antics worthy of a jumping-jack. At the root of nervousness, in most instances, is nonassimilation of the food, and consequently innutrition of the nerves as of the other tissues of the body. This prolonged is, of course, productive of serious nervous disease. The remedy is Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters, that invigorates the stomach and enables it to perform its functions properly. Soon after commending a course of it. it will be found that the nerves grow more tranquil by day, nightly repose becomes less interrupted, and appetite more vigorous and satisfying. These are the initial indications, followed by the complete restoration of nervous vigor. The Bitters also cure fever and ague, liver complaint, and constipation. I ■
PNEUMONIA.
Wby Not Call Thia Terrible Scourge by Its Rightful Name? (New York Telecram.] Many a strong, weu-bunt man leaves home to-day; before night he will have a chili, and in a few hours will be dead! This is, the way the dreaded pneumonia takes people oft The list of notable men who are its victims is appalling. It sweeps over the land like a scourge, and destroys poor and rich alike Everyone dreads it. Its coming is sudden, its termination usually speedy. What causes It? Pneumonia,we are told, is invited by a certain condition of the system, indicated if one has occasional chills and fevers, a tendency to cold in the throat and lungs, rheumatic and neuralgic pains, extreme t.red feelings, short breath and pleuritic stitches in the side, loss of appetite, backache, nervous unrest, scalding senrations, or scant and discolored fluids, heart flutterings, sour stomach, distressed look, puffy eye sacs, hot and dry skin, loss of strength and virility. These indications may not appear together; they may come, disappear, and reappear for years, the person not realizing that they are nature’s warning of a coming calamity. In other words, if pneumonia does not claim as a Victim the persons having such symptoms some less sudden but quite as fatal malady certainly will. A celebrated New York physician told the Tribune that pneumonia was a secondary disorder, the exposure and cold being simply the agent which develops the disease, already dormant in the system, because the kidnevs have been but partially doing their duty. In short, pneumonia is but an early indication of a Bright’s diseased condition. This impaired action may exist for years without the patient suspecting it, because no pain will be felt in the kidneys or their vicinity, and'often it can be detected only by chemical and microscopical observations. Nearly 150 of the 740 deaths in New York City the first week in April (and in six weeks 781 deaths) were caused Dy pneumonia! The disease is very obstinate, and if the accompanying kidney disorder is very far advanced, recovery is impossible, for the kidneys give out entirely, and the patient is literally suffocated by water. The only safeguard against pneumonia is to maintain a vigorous condition of the system, and thus prevent its attacks, by using whatever will radically and effectually restore full vitality to the kidneys, for if they are not sound, pneumonia cannot be prevented. For this purpose there is nothing equal to Warner’s safe cure, a remedy known to millions, used probably by hundreds of thousands ana commended as a standard specific wherever known and used It does not pretend to cure an a’trek of pneumonia, but it does remove the eau'. of and prevent that disease if taken in time. No reasonable man can doubt this if he rega ds the personal experience of thousands of h morable men. W: en a physician says his patient has either Bright’s disease or pneumonia he confesses his inability to cure, and in a measure he considers Ijis responsibility ended. In many instances, indeed, persons are reported as dying of pneumonia, heart disease, apoplexy and convulsions, when the real cause of death, and so known by the physician, is this kidney consumption. Thousands of people have it without knowing it and perish of it because their physicians will not tell them the facts! The same fate awaits every one one who will not exercise his judgment in such a matter.
Couldn’t Identify the Baby.
It is a wise child that knows its own father, but hear the case of a Detroit father who didn’t know his own child. It was the first baby and the admiring household took him to a photograph gallery and had his picture taken. She sent the baby’s father to get it and he had to select it from a half dozen taken that day and he couldn’t do it. His wife knew it at a glance, and now his friends make no end of fun of the new father.— Detroit Free Press.
