EIGHT GOOD REASONS
Why the Tariff Should be Be FORMED AND REDUCED. [New York Post] The tariff should be reduced and reconstructed in order: 1. To relieve th 1 great body of the people from needless t urdei s on the necessaries of life and on the materials and tools of industry. 2. Torem.ve artificial obstructions to, the growth of our manufactures, which restrict them to the home market and shut them out from the markets of the world.
3. To introduce the principle of equal taxation according to the means of the taxpayers, and not according to thei r nee s as consumers of dutiable goods. 4. To remove the causes of social discontent by giving to every man the whole of his earnirgs, instead of taxing one class to insure profits forancther. 5. To destroy the monopolies now multiplying all over the country under the name of trusts, under shelter of the tariff. 6. To increase the national wealth by leaving capital and labor free to seek their highest reward.
7. To remove from congress the corrupting influences of a neverending scramble for favors and advantages, under the tariff, to particular classes, which can be given only at the expense of those not so favored.
8. To expunge the false and grov?ling idea that the American people, with the richest land and the greatest natural resources that the sun shines upon, can not earn their living without taxing themselves $100,000,000 per year more than is necessary.
