SCIENCE NEWS AND NOTES.
Saeeharine. Prof. C. Fahlberg, who, under the direction of JProf. Na Remsen, chief of the chemical laboratory of the Johns Hopkins University, discovered the intensely sweet principle known as '‘saccharine,” is about establishing another great factory for its manufacture. The European consumption of this strange antiseptic sweetening agent, drawn from cd al tar, already exceeds the capacity of the Magdeburg factory, although its cost is quite equal to that of its sweetening equivalent, the best cane sugar. Dr. Fahlberg says the sale in America is greatly hampered by the duty. If this duty were abolished it could be used to make cheap, good sugar out of the whole glucose product of America, saving to the country many of the millions now paid abroad for cane and beet-root sugar.
Strain Heating of Cars. During the severest “blizzard” of the season, from the 12th to the 17th of January last, a steam-heated train on the Chicago & Northwestern Railway Railway struggled with snow and cold on a special run from Chicago to Des Moines, lowa, 363 miles and return. Seventeen hours of this time were spent in a snow drift. During the trip the temperature of the outside air ranged down to 29 degrees below. The cars were kept comfortable through all this. When the engine was detached to seek release from the snow drift the cars were kept warm by the Baker heaters. The Hallway Review thinks that steam heating is shown in this experiment to be here to stay, despite the cavil of unbelievers, for it has successfully carried a train through conditions that reach the maximum of severity in our latitudes. But it has also shown that we are as yet only upon the threshold of the science of steam heating.
Engraving by Dynamite. Dynamite is so instantaneous in its action that a green leaf can be compressed into the hardest steel before it has time to flatten. One of the experiments at the United States torpedo •works was to place some leaves between two heavy pieces of flat iron, set them on a firm foundation, and see what gun-cotton would do in forcing the iron pieces together. A charge was placed upon them by compressing the gun-cotton into a cylindrical form about one inch thick and three or four inches in diameter, through the center of which a hole is made for a cap of fulminate of mercury, by which the gun-cotton is exploded. The reaction was so great, from merely being exploded in the open air, that one of the iron pieces was driven down upon the other quick enough to catch an impression of the leaves before they could escape.
An Old-School Scientist. Prof. Alexander Dickson, the eminent Scotch botanist who died Dec. 30 1887, in his 52d year, was a man of the old “Kit North” school. During the Christmas holidays he spent much of his time in the favorite pastime of curling, and on the day of his death he was in exceptionally good spirits on the ice; h s side was winning a close match, and he entered keenly into the excitement of the moment, when, without warning, he dropped dead in the act of making a shot. He was an accomplished and enthusiastic musician, and in later years found peculiar pleasure in collecting Gaelic airs. At botanical excursions in the Highlands he might be frequently found noting down an air as it was droned by a gillie or whistled by a herd, and he amassed a considerable number of these airs, whiah at one time he thought of publishing.
Austria’s Remarkable Diplomacy.
There is no story in the history of the world more remarkable than that of Austria. It is the history of the triumph of diplomacy over war and yet of a diplomacy dependent always for its power on a certain kind of military strength. To us it seems that though undoubtedly the heterogeneous character of the monarchy, which has always weakened its armies, is more apparent than ever, yet that, in a contest with Russia which should take place a year or two hence, Austria would be practically stronger than she has been at any time in her history. The Austrian armies have probably sustained more defeats than any other troops in Europe, yet over and again she has become the decisive power, whose influence, thrown into the scale, has determined the issues of victorious war.
It was her union with the allies that proved fatal to Napoleon in 1813. Her union with us during the campaigns of Marlborough is connected with some of the most glorious periods of our own military history. The power of recuperation which she has again and again shown after defeat has been marvelous. It is no doubt due to the fact that the population, almost entirely agricultural, has always furnished a vast, supply of hardy, healthy soldiers; while the masses of her rural folk have, despite the socialism of the towns, been less disposed toward revolutionary changes than any others in Europe. Patriotism, except in Hungary, is no doubt difficult for the inhabitants of the agglomerated empire. It is hard to know toward what nation their patriotism should be felt Nevertheless, the loyalty of many races—the Tyrolese, for instance—and generally an attachment to the royal house, if it does not supply all the motive power which armies need, save Austria from many of the risks which some of her neighbors run.— Blackwood’s Magazine.
“Nasal Vaices, Catarrh, and False Teeth.”
A prominent English woman says the American women all have high, shrill, "H* 1 voices and false teeth. Americana don’t like the constant twitting they got about this nasal twang, and yet it is a fact, caused by our dry, stimulating atmosphere and the universal presence of catarrhal difficulties. • But why should so many of our women have false tedth? Hiat is more of a poser to the English. It is quite impossible to account for it except on the theory of deranged stomach action, caused by imprudence in eating and by want of regular exercise. Both conditions are unnatural Catarrhal troubles everywhere prevail and end in cough and consumption, which are promoted by mal-nu trition induced by deranged stomach action. The condition is a modern one, one unknown to our ancestors who prevented the catarrh, cold, cough and consumption by abundant and regular use of what is now known as Warner’s Log Cabin Cough and Consumption Remedy and Log Cabin Sarsaparilla, two old-fashioned standard remedies handed down from our ancestors, and now exclusively put forth under the strongest guarantees of purity and efficacy by the world-famed makers of Warner’s safe cure. These two remedies plentifully used as the spring and summer seasons advance give a positive assurance of freedom, both from catarrh and those dreadful and, if neglected, inevitable consequences, pneumonia, lung troubles and consumption, which so generally and fatally prevail among our people. Comrade Eli Fisher, of Salem, Henry County, lowa, served four years in the late war, and contracted a disease called consumption by the doctors. He had frequent hemorrhages. After using Warner’s Log Cabin Cough and Consumption remedy, he says, under date of Jan. 19th, 1888: “I do not bleed at the lungs any more, my cough does not bother me, and Ido not have any more smothering spells.” Warner’s Log Cabin Rose Cream cured his wife of catarrh, and she is “sound and well.” Of course we do not like to have our women called nose talkers and false-teeth owners, but these conditions can b| readily overcome in the manner indicated. *
Quality Superior to Quantity.
“My dear,” said a New York man to his wife, after perusing the evening paper, “are you aware of the fact tha r . a man’s brain weighs three and a half pounds?” “You’ve just read that, haven’t you?” “Yes.” “Well, doesn’t that article say that a woman’s is somewhat lighter ?” “It certainly does.” . “And it also informs you that a woman’s brain is of much finer quality ?” “Yes.” “Well, then, just concentrate your three-and-a-half-pound intellect on that scuttle, and figure out how much it will weigh after you bring it up full of coal from the cellar.” The man with the great hea’d departed for the lower regions in search of information.— Texas Siftinqs.
You Can’t Make a Samson
Out of an attenuated dude, with meagre legs, pigeon chest, and a slight cough. But a man or woman to whom constitutional vigor has been denied can get it to a very considerable extent by the persistent use, in regularly proportioned, alternated doses, of America’s chief tonic, Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters. To the nerves and muscles of the stomach that genial invigorant imparts tone, and to its operations regularity. The proximate result is thorough digestion and complete assimilation of the food, and the ultimate sequence, blood fertile with the elements of muscular tissue, a healthy appetite, nightly rest unimpaired, and a disappearance of the nervous symptoms to which etiolated invalids are always subject, and which they are very prone to take for the manifestations of serious organic disease, and dose accordingly. In diseases of the kidneys and bladder, always excessively weakening, and for constipation, fever and ague, and liver complaint, use the Bitters.
Little Polly’s Criticism.
Little Polly, five years old, who cannot read a word, is busily making believe read aloud common topics from the newspapers in the shape of small items. Suddenly looking up and seeing every one watching, she throws the paper down with disgust, and jumping up exclaims : “What stuff they do put in the papers, anyway!"— Boston Globe. A San Francisco man who refused to pay a bill of $336.50 for twenty-two hours’ work put on his teeth, was sued by the dentist for the amount. The court cut the charges down to S7O, which the defendant willingly paid.

Spring Medicine Nearly everybody needs a reliable spring medicine to expel the impurities which have accumulated in the blood during the winter, to keep up strength as the warm weather comes on, create an appetite and promote healthy digestion. Hood’s Sarsaparilla is the most popular and successful Spring Medicine. Try it thia spring and you will be convinced of its peculiar merit. “For five years I was sick every spring, but last year took Hood’s Sarsaparilla and have not seen a sick day since." G. W. Sloan, Milton, Mass, Hood’s Sarsaparilla “For a first-class spring medicine my wife and I both think very highly of Hood’s Sarsaparilla. We both took it last spring. It did us a great deal of good, and we felt better through the hot weather than ever before. It cured my wife of sick headache, from which she has suffered a great deal, and relieved me of a dizzy, tired feeling. I think every one ought to take something to purify the blood before the hot weather comeson, and we shall certainly take Hood’s Sarsaparilla this spring,” J. H. Peirce, Supt.
