An Erroneous Idea About Rattlesnakes.
As to the cussedness of the rattlesnake I would like to correct a very common error. These otherwise dangerous reptiles always give warning, •and never bite unless roughly trod upon, or incautiously caught with tne hand. On a cold, rainy, or damp day, when partially torpid, they give no alarm, and will not bite under any circumstances. A man may take them up and fold them around his neck without harm. The same may be done at other times, but the performer must be extremely cautious. He may touch any part of the snake’s body, except the tail or rattles. The rattler has a wellknown, but unwritten law: “Thou shalt not suffer any man to touch thy tail, or thy rattles, on pain of death to the offender.” Observing this law, an expert may handle one of these reptile (monsters almost any time with absolute impunity. It is needless to say, however, that I do not recommend such performance as an every-day exercise. Even an unloaded gun will sometimes go off unexpectedly.-— Philadelphia Press.
Soldiering in Burmah.
Shortly after my enlistment our regiment was ordered to Bnrmah to subdue the natives. In addition to the English troops we had natives as well. The hostile natives were known as dacoits, and we had some very lively skirmishes with them. A friendly Buddhist priest informed ns one night of the location of an enemy’s camp, and a detachment was sent out to capture it. We surrounded them and they tried to fight their way out, and one big fellow came within three inches of splitting my head with his knife. We captured about thirty of them. Another time we attacked a little army of them who had taken up a position at the summit of a steep kill. They rolled big bowlders down <npon us, and I barely escaped one that must have weighed" about ten tons.— Philadelphia Beeord.
Prudence! Prudence!
In medication, as in aught else, prudence Should be our guide. Yet thousands cast it to the winds. Every new nostrum finds its patrons, the medical empirics of every false school have their gulls. Every change In th* gamut of humbug is rung successfully—for a time at least—the notes being furnished by ■the credulous. In happy contrast to the many advertised impostures of the day stands Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters, now in its third deoade of popularity, approved and recommended toj physicians, indorsed by the press of many lanas, sought and prized by invalids everywhere. It is an ascertained specific for and preventive of malajrial diseases, chronio indigestion, liver complaint, and constipation, checks the growth of rheumatism and neuralgia, is a peerless invigorant and useful diuretic. Nervous people benefit by it.

SOAP PEDDLERS IN WALTHAM.
A Sharp Trick Played by a Crowd of Itinerant Venders. Two or three days ago Chief of Police Burleigh, of Waltham, learned that six or seven Btrangers were in the city peddling what parported to be Pearline, and that in connection therewith they were perpetrating what was practically a fraud. It seems that they had two teams and were canvassing the town very thoroughly. Going from house to house, they would offer packages of what they called Pearline, although in order to save themselves from the grip of the law, they had labeled them “Perline." With every eight packagos, which they sold for #l, they gave eight bars of soap. The Chief encountered them on the street, and two of the men—one on each team —who seemed to have the handl ug of the business gave their names as Isaac G. Worcester ana Hiram Belding. They claimed, in response to the charge that they were peddling without a license, that they were selling goods of their own manufacture aud that they were giving the soap away. Before the case could be presented to Judge Luce and a warrant obtained they had all “ skipped ” the town, and numerous families are now bewailing the fact that they have a lot of worthless powder and light bars of poor soap, worth, all told, less tnan 25 cents, to show for a good dollar. The names of the party, as registered at the Prospeot House, wnere they stopped while in Waltham, are E. H. Barnes, John Goodwin, C. D. Osgood, C. A Frost, J. Malcolm, H. Carroll, and 0. H.
