Montic«llo Herald: A Rensselaer man of practical turn presented his wife with an ax as a birthday present. She will have to worry along with her old saw and buck till her next birthday. Monticello Herald: Mrs. Schilt and her sister, Anna Miller, will assist in a concert at Rensselaer next Wednesday evening for the benefit of the high school library. Rensselaer people will miss a treat if they fail to Hear them. *■«•»- Now, how about Gen. Carnahan, Judge Woods ? In the recent trial of Coy and Bernhamer for election conspiracy, it seems to us was proven that +he instructions o the Cmiahan circular were obeyed in a number of instances.
In 1884 the Eleventh Congressional District of Michigan gave Moffatt, Republican, 7,475 majority over Po ver, Democrat; in 1885 Moffatt’s majority w s 2,243 over Power. This winter, at a special election, Seymour, Republican, carried the District over Breern Democrat, by only 200 majority. The 'tariff was made an issue in the campaign.
Jingo Jim Blaine declines to be the Republican candidate for the Presidency. Gen. Phil. Sheridan emphatically declines. Now Edmunds, he, too, declines. John Sherman and Ben Harrison are willing to accept on the theory that they prefer to be recognized as dead lions rather than living as^es.
A "Washington dispatch ! says Senator Dav.d Turuie, of this State, made a strong and impressive speech in the Senate last week, in support of the Dependent Pension Bill recommended by the Grand Army of the .Republic. He overhauled history as far back as old Rome, and brought the application down to modern times in a scholarly and interesting way.
As w anticipated, Judge Harlan has sustained the finding of Judge Woods’ court in the *ases of Coy and Berrhamer. If these men are guilty the act charged 4 hey deserve punishment, but in our judgment, after a c&refcl reading of the evidence as publisned in the Indianapolis News, a Republican paper, we cannot see how the jury reached such a verdict— The cases will be taken to the Unitdd States Supreme Court.
A Good Show Coming
Rensselaer people are to have the privilege of attending at least one first-class theatrical entertainment, this season, Anon’s Musical Comedy Company aDd Swiss Bell Ringers, supported by the charming soubrette, Miss Emma Gertrude and the popular comedian abd vocalist Jimmie Field, will give the musical comedy Snow, Bound, next Saturday evening, March 3, with many interesting additional attractions. This is an old established company and its true merits are fully proven by the fact that it has been on the road for many years, and is never afraid to revisit a town in which they have previously exhibited; as, in fact, our own town gives proof, they having exhibited here, to a delighted audience five or six years ago.
