WEAK AND NERVOUS WOMEN.
Ho* Strength of Nerves and Health of Body May Easily Be Obtained. Women an great sufferers from nervousness, weakness, nervous prostration, and exhaustion. They droop and languish under household cares and work which never ends. They retire tired and wake tired and unrefresned; they an worn out and exhausted in nerve and vital power, and have no strength or energy. Fortunately—and it would almost seem a dispensation of Divine Providence to overworked humanity—there are medicines which restore lost nerve forces, rebuild the weakened system and re-establish health, stnngth and energy. These medicines, which are punly vegetable, have been combined into a wonderful remedy known as Dr. Greene’s Nervura Nerve Tonic, which is kept by all druggists at 11 per bottle. This truly wonderful remedy is without doubt the greatest discovery of the century, and is the best strengthening and invigorating remedy ever known. For nervous and physical exhausion, weak, tired and languid feelings, with no power or ambition for exertion, it is a sovereign remedy and absolutely certain cure. In cases of sleeplessness and nervous irritability its use will be ‘followed by calm repose and natural, refreshing sleep. For nervousness, nervous debility, exhausted vitality, despondency and depression of the mind it is a perfect specific. For malaria, neuralgia, rheumatism, paralysis, .numbness, trembling and insanity it is the only positive and recognized remedy. It never fails to cure nervous and sick headache, weakness and pain in the back and side, palpitation of the heart, apoplexy, epileptic fits, hysteria, St Vitus’ dance, dyspepsia, indigestion, loss of appetite, biliousness, kidney and liver diseases? Other medicines may be offered by druggists, but do not be persuaded to try uncertainties, when by the use of this wonderful remedy you can certainly be cured. Should Sour druggist not have I)r. Greene’s Nervura erve Tonic, he will get it for you if you insist upon having it Dr. Greene, its discoverer, is the great specialist in the cure of nervous and chronic diseases, and he may be consulted by those using this remedy, or by any sufferer from disease, free of charge, at his office, 35 West 14th st, Nsw York personally or by letter.
Festival of the Devil.
The Devil Festival is said to have originated in a legend of the mother of a fabulous person, Mu-lien; she was about the wickedest then in existence, theresbeing no crime which she left uncommitted. After her death she appeared one night to her son Mu-lien with a heavy wooden collar round about her neck, and she harrowed his soul with the tale of her sufferings in the lower regions.' She said she was enduring the penalty for her unnumbered sins during her early life, and pleaded with her son to deliver her out of the hands of Pluto. This to him seemed
an impossible task, as no human being can enter the dark regions and return alive. She told him he must become a Buddhist priest, and that there was a door in a certain Buddhist temple which he could open, and so let out the prisoners from the shades below. !The son, being filial, obeyed the behest of his mother and sought out a welliknown Buddhist priest in a certain famous temple and asked to be admitted as a novice. As his life was pure, the priest willingly admitted him. lAfter having been there several months and learned all the Buddhist prayers he sought out the door that led to the Dower Shades, whither the wicked ones hail gone, and, remembering his mother’s instruction, he knocked open the door. The Judge Pluto being always willing to release his victims upon the intercession of saints, he has set all his prisoners free for a certain length of time every year, beginning on the 15th of the seventh moon, ever since the time when St. Mu-lien opened that door. It has become customary for the people throughout the country, in the seventh moon of every year, to worship their ancestors, whose spirits are then at large. The annual Devil Festival held by the Cantonese and Fuhkienese began to-day by theatricals, etc., at their cemetery below Hsing Hua Chun. It will last three days and three nights. The people from Canton and Fuhkien provinces are not few, and those whose remains are buried here are numerous. The amount of paper clothes, money, etc., burned to the departed is consequently very great. The spectators of theatrical plays rush in from every part of the city. The streets are enlivened by numerous passing mule carts and jinrikshas.—London Queen.
The Wane of Intellect.
The mind, on which man so prides himself, develops and expands until the age of about forty, and then declines. Decay is the inexorable law of Nature. Sad is the fading away of a brilliant mind at the approach of dissolution, but sadder than death is it when the brain perishes before the body. “How often, alas, we see,” says Holmes, “the mighty satirist tamed into oblivious imbecility, the great scholar wandering without sense of time or place among his alcoves, taking his books one by one from the shelves and patting them: a child once more among his toys, but a child whose to-mor-rows come hungry, and not fullhanded—come as birds ol prey in the place of the sweet singers of morning. We must all become as little children if we live long enough; but how blank an existence the wrinkled infant must cany into the kingdom of heaven if the Power that gave him memory does not complete the miracle by restoring it!” — Arkansaw Traveler.
An Arabian Game of Marbles.
The Arabs play marbles differently from the American boys. Of course the arrangement of the marbles to be shot at can be varied in many ways, but the young Arabs shoot the marble in a way of their own and much more accurately than the American lads. The left hand is laid flat on the ground with the fingers closed together, and the marble is placed in the groove between the middle finger and forefinger. The forefinger of the right hand is then pressed firmly on the end joint of the middle finger, and when the middle finger is suddenly pushed aside the forefinger of the right hand slips out
with more or less force and projects the marble very accurately in the direction of the groove on the left hand. Many of the boys become very expert —St. Nicholas.
He Had Correct Habits.
“For ten years past,” said the new boarder, “my habits have been regular as clock-work. I rose on the stroke of 6; half an hour later I sat down to breakfast; at 7 I was at work, dined at 12, ate supper at 6, and was in bed at 9:30, ate only hearty food, and hadn’t a sick day in all that time.” “Dear me,” said the deacon, in sympathetic tones, “and what were you in for ?” And in the awful silence that followed you could hear the harsh grate its teeth. — Burdette. The “Habeas Corpus,” for the better securing the liberty of the subject, originated in England during the reign of Charles H. The habeas corpus act has been suspended many times in England, during rebellion, and in Ireland and Scotland. It was suspended in the United States by President Lincoln, Sept. 24, 1862, and again in September, 1863. Dispensaries to supply the poor with medical advice and medicine originated in London, when the Royal General Dispensary was established in that city, as early as 1770. The first theater, that of Bacchus at Athens, was built by Philos, 420 B. C. Marcellus’ theater at Rome was begun by Caesar and dedicated by Augustus, 12 B. Ladies suffering from any of the weaknesses or ailments peculiar to their sex, and who will use Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription according to directions, will experience a genuine revelation in the benefit they will receive. Happiness.
The foundation of happiness is health. A man with an imperfect digestion may be a millionaire, may be the husband of an angel and the father of half a dozen cherubs, and yet be miserable if he be troubled with dyspepsia, or any of the disorders arising from imperfect digestion or a sluggish liver.
