THE POLITICAL FIELD.
A Washington special to the Chicago Daily News (mugwump) says: “There is said to be an organized movement among a number of Rebublican politicians having for its object the nomination of Gen. Sheridan for President. Those engaged in the movement believe that an irrepressible conflict will develop in the Republican National Convention between the adherents of Blaine and Sherman which will prevent the nomination of either of those leaders, and that Sheridan can command a sufficient number of delegates to secure the nomination as Haye3 did at Cincinnati in 1876, and as Garfield did at Chicago in 1883. l*am informed that this project to nominate Sheridan was started about six months ago by certain leaders who believe that the Republican party must look to the soldier element at the next national election. ” The Mormons met at Salt Lake and elt cted sixteen delegates to the Constitutional Convention. The hope is that a constitution will be adopted which will meet objections to the admission of Utah, and to the polygamists being enfranchised. Congressman Richard W. Townshend, who is a radicil free-trader, is said to be hooked for tho w;ays and means chairmanship iu the new House. Hj is not very hopeful that much will bj accomplished in the line of tariff reform at the next season.
