Clear the Way
Without loss of time, when the intestinal canal is blocked up by reason of constipation, chronic or temporary. It should be borne in mind that this ailment is prone to become lasting and obstinate, and breed other and worse complaints. Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters is the precise remedy to remove the obstruction effectually, but without drenching or weakening the blockaded bowels, a consequence always to be apprehended from the use of violent laxatives, which are among ths most pernicious of the cheap nostrums swallowed by the credulous and misinformed. The fiat of experience, and of the medical fraternity, sanctions the claims of this standard aperient. Not only as a source of relief and permanent regularity to the bowels, liver, and stomach, but as a means of remedying and preventing kidney and bladder troubles and fever and ague, it is without a peer.
The Winds of Heaven.
If the winds of heaven could become visible to us, and if from some standpoint far out in the blue we could look down upon them, we should, no doubt, find some of our preconceived notions considerably modified. That they would present a spectacle sublime beyond conception goes without saying, and, though no doubt wild and seemingly choatic enough to baffle the eye of an archangel in an attempt to trace out the entire system of their motions, a comprehensive view would perhaps present more of regularity than we are accustomed to associate with the winds. No doubt the first thing that would strike the attention in such a survey would be, not the wild chaos of the aerial currents, but their orderly rhythmical motions. For instance, throughout the tropics at ordinary times there is a morning and evening ebb and flow of the air as regular and as pronounced as the ebb and flow of the ocean. All coasts there suck in a moist, refreshing breeze from the ocean in the morning and breathe out again at night. To the eye that could detect this grand inhaling and also exhaling over the whole tropical earth, and could see also the great trade winds sweeping down from the poles to the equator in majestic currents hundreds of miles wide, two m ghty streams that meet in the torrid zone, flow upward and move back in the upper atmosphere—to the eye that could discern all this, and the many other regular and periodical currents, aswe l as the circular whirling of storms, and, possibly, the circular movements of storm centers, the most impressive fact of our atmospheric movements would not be their capricious irregularity, their fitful uncertainty, but the sublime order and rhythm of the winds. A veteran, Mr. George Me Kona, Ashburnham, Mass., writes: “While suffering with c ronic rheumatism (result of Andersonville), I used St. Jacobs Oil, which gave immediate relief.’’ Sold by druggists and dealers.
Remote Acquaintance.
Goldsmith wrote of a certain pretentious woman: The King himself has followed her, When she has walked before. The following incident reminds one of the woman. A lady intimated that she was personal y acquainted with the poet, Henry W. Longfellow. “When did you meet him?” asked a friend. “Oh—l—l,” was the somewhat confused reply, “I—that is, I didn’t exact y meet him myself, but I walked out of church one day with a woman who liod met him, and she told me all about him. ” Her degree of acquaintanceship was about equal to that; of a woman who felt that she “really knew the Queen.” A foreign minister was once persuaded, against his better judgment, to introduce a countrywoman at the court of one of the continental nations. It is not a part of an A merican minister’s duty to act as social sponsor for ambitious nobodies, or to introduce at court people who do not know how to behave when they get there. But the Queen received the woman kindly, and the matter promised to end well, when imagine the Minister’s horror on hearing, in reply to the Queen’s courteous greeting, the woman say, “I really feel as if I had known you a long time. You know we go to the same chiropodist!” Carl Otto Schoenrich, Captain Oriole Yacht Club, Baltimore, Md., writes: “The club, during practLe cruise, used St. Jacobs Oil, and it cur jd sjveral cases of sprains and bruises.” Sold by druggists and dealers everywhere.
Fast as Lightning.
“These are fast colors, are they?” asked the customer. “Um,” said th? merchant. “You’ll warrant ’em fast?” repeated the buyer. “Cm.” Then he added, “But you must keep ’em kind o’ dry; if you fetch ’em nigh the water they’ll come out a good deal faster’n you can bring ’em back. Still they’re what you might call fast colors, as colors go.” “Yes,” the customer said, “I reckon they’ll go.” Then she went too. — Burdette.
Lincoln’s Old Hat.
The old silk hat worn by Abraham Lincoln when he left Springfield, 111., for Washington to be inaugurated, in 1861, is carefully preserved by Mr. George Gibson, of New York. It is a badly battered old “stove-pipe,” and has on the inside lining the autograph of “A. Lincoln.” Lincoln, when he reached New York, was presented with a new hat by an enterprising hatter, and gave him the old hat in return. Mr. Gibson obtained it from his father, who was a well-known antiquarian. A Sad Case of Poisoning
Is that of any man or woman afflicted with disease or derangement of the liver, resulting in poisonous accumulations in the blood, scrofulous affections, sick headaches, and diseases of the kidneys, lungs or heart. These troubles can be cured only by going to the primary cause, and putting the nyer in a healthy condition. To accomplish this result speedily and effectually nothing has proved it elf so efficacious as Dr. Pierce’s “Golden Medical Discovery,” which has never failed to do the work claimed for it, and never will
Books. It is books that teach us to define our pleasures when young, and which, having so taught us, enable us to recall them with satisfaction when old. A lawn party is pleasant enough until it begins to rain. Then it becomes a forlorn party. What can be more disagreeable, more disgusting, than to sit in a room with a person who is troubled with catarrh, snd has to keep coughing and clearing his or her throat of the mucus which drops inti it? Such persons are always to be pined if they try to cure themselves and fail. But if they get Dr. Sage’s Catarrh Remedy there need be no failure.
