Harper's Bazar, a conceded authority, says it is “one of the finest books of the kind ever published;” and when one lady gets a copy all her neighbors will want one also. Sheep in the Early Days.
“He calleth his own sheep by name and leadeth them out. And when he putteth forth (from the folder his own sheep, he goeth before them and the sheep follow him; for they know his voice. And a stranger they will not follow, but will flee from him, for they know not the voice of strangers.’—Johns. 3-5. In reference to this passage of Scripture, John Hartley, in his “.Researches in Greece and the Levant,” says: “I asked my man if itis usual in Greece to give names to sheep. He informed me that it was, and that the sheep obeyed the shepherd when he called them by their names.
I had an opportunity of verifying the truth of this remark. Passing by a flock of sheep, I asked the shepherd the same question which I put to my servant, and he gave me the same answer. I tlien bade him call one of his sheep. He did so, and it instantly left its pasturage and companions and ran up to the hand of the shepherd, with signs of pleasure and with that prompt obedience which I have never before observed in any other animal. It is also true of the sheep in this country, that ‘a stranger they will not follow, but wiH flee from him, for they know not the voice of strangers.’”—Exchange.
Saved at the Altar.
The beautiful young girl had plighted her love, and was at the altar ready to give her heart and hand to the man who would have destroyed her very life. The moment when she is to say those, to her, fatal words is fast approaching, when fate steps in and saves her. Without a doubt the most thrilling story of the times is “Cross Purposes; or, Saved at the Altar,” by George W. Ogilvie, soon to appear' in the Chicago Ltdgcr. Persons desiring the first installments of this story should subscribe now. Remember/ sample copies can be secured free of cost, by sending your address to the office. How to Sleep.
A physician, referring to the custom of traveling on sleeping-cars with the berths made up with their heads toward the engine, said: “It is certainly bad for the brain of the sleeper, as it is not natural, a id it is no wonder that so many travelers, especially those who have been on the road extensively, experience bad effects from it.”
Was It Meant to Be Personal?
After the accident: She —“Were you hurt much, Mr. De Doodle?” Mr. DeD.—“Aw, Miss Claiwa, Iwas, aw, knocked senseless, don’t you know.” She—“Oh, I’m so glad you escaped. They told me you had been injured.” Mr. De D. wonders what she meant. —Washington Critic.
She’s Here Already.
Dr. Mary Walker says the coming woman will wear pants. If Dr. Mary Walker had been a married man she would have said regarding the pants business that the woman is here, and she wears the pants by a large and most enthusiastic majority.— Boston Courier. The proprietor of the Plaip, Dealer, Fort Madison, lowa, Mr. th. Hr'Duffns, writes: “Two years ago I wasjtired of rheumatism in my knee by S£. Jacobs Oil; have had no return; did the work.” Steel sleepers on the Northeastern Railway, of England, gave indications of a life of twenty to twenty-five years, whereas the wooden ties last but twelve to fourteen years. The economy is doubtful, however, as the steel ties cost double those of wood. Unquestioned success with metallic sleepers is thus far confined to India, where wood is quickly destroyed by insects. Rhode Island was the last of the original thirteen States to ratify the national Constitution, and it was only upon the passage of a bill by the national Senate prohibiting commerce with the recreant State that Little Rhody at length gave in her adherence, thus completing again the union of the thirteen. This was accomplished in 1790.

Agony Is Courted
By persons who, attacked by a mild form of rheumatism, neglect to seek prompt relief. Subsequent torture is prevented by an immediate resort to Hostetter's Stomach Bitters. Slight exposure, an occasional draught, will beget thia painful malady, where there is a predisposition to it in the blood. It is not difficult to anest the trouble at the outset, but well nigh impossible to eradicate it when matured. No evidence in relation to this superb blood depurent is morepositive than that which establishes its efficacy as a preventive and remedy for rheumatism. Not only is it thorough, but safe, which the vegetable and mineral poisons, often taken as curatives of the disease, sore net. Besides expelling the rheumatic virus from the syntem, it overcomes fever and ague, biliousness, constipation, and dyspepsia.
A Lively Bullock Race.
Jeypore is a typical Hindoo city in almost every respect, 'lhe Rajah is a Hindoo, and the great mass of the people are Hindoos, writes a correspondent. No foreigners live or do business within the city walls. The city gates are closed at 9 o’clock at night, and no one can either leave or enter it after 11 o’clock without a permit from the Rajah. As we drove a’ong we were .particularly struck by the great number of white bulls in the street and one on the sidewalk. These bulls are so cared for and petted as to be as mild-manner-ed as cows. It was on this street that we first saw trotting bullocks. They are white in color, of large size and with immense curved horns, which are generally painted a deep green. It is a curious sight to see them as they trot along at a r ght respectable gait, the driver, bare-armed and bare-legged, handling the reins with as much care as though he was driving Maud S.
From Boston.
One of the most eminent physicians in Boston gives his opinion that the extent of the Moxie Nerve Food plant, now no rapidly substituting stimulants and recovering the nervou< women, will probably become one of the great trade staples of the country, because its place cannot Le filled. Most of the dealers so consider it now, and even the grocers deliver it to their customers as they do eatables. When we consider it has been on the market but fourteen months, and that it can now be found in almost any part of the country, and that the company are selling it at the rate of 7,200,000 bottles per year, it must have a most marvelous power over the people.
Kind Friends.
Friend —“I have brought you a few slices of ham.” Poor Neighbor—“Ah! How kind you are.” “Don’t mention it. It is really a pleasure for me to show you any little attention.” “Well, I appreciate your kindness. I can assure you of that. ” “As I said before, I am only too glad to be able to accommodate you. The slices are cut from a ham that was given us. By the way, if you discover any symptoms of trichinae in your family, after you have tried the ham, you will let us know, please. We are not going to eat of it until we hear from you.”— Texas Siftings. Gen’l Samuel I. Given, sx-Chief of Police, Philadelphia, Pa., writes: “Years ag j I was permanently cured by St. Jacobs Oil. I have had no occasion to use it since. My family keep it on hand. Its healing qualities are wonderful.” Sold by druggists and dealers everywhere.

“What keeps Mr. from kirk, James?” said a worthy minister; “1 hope it is not Methodism “No!” responded the verger. “It’s something worse. ” “What, then. Is it Calvinism?” “Worse, your reverence, worse.” “Surely James, it is not Deism?” “Much worse, an’ it please your reverence, than that.” “Can it be Atheism which deprives us of the best church-warden that ever shook a box ?”
“Truly,” responded James, “ ’tis a much more serious matter; it is rheumatism.”—St. Louis Magazine.
