The Evansville Courier pertinently remarks: Is it not a strange idea to seriously argue that the prosperity of a people will be impaired by relieving them of unl ecessary taxation? Yet this is exactly the position of the prot cticmsts. They argue that the wa ' to make people prosperous and liappy is to rack on the taxes. The India la Legislature met yesterday and was organized for business. The Supreme Court having decided that it lacked jurisdiction in the Lieutenant Governorship question, the Senate concluded that jurisdiction rested .n it, and recognized the President of the Senate, Senator Smith, as its presiding oificer. 11l House was organized with Republican officials. Referring to the decision of the Supreme Court in the Lieutenant Governorship muddle, Senator Yoorhees recently remarked to a correspondent of the Louisville Courier-J ournal: “I have not luliy considered it; but from a hasty reading it seems to me the court has fortified itself with authorities and reasoning to show its want of jurisdiction. I was doubtful myself about the question of jurisdiction. I have never had any doubt on the main question. In my opinion, the election of a Lieutenant-Governor last fall was a nullity, and Mr. Robertson had no sort of a title to the office. But the Supremo Court iiaving failed to advise the Legis- . lature at out the matter, owing to its want of jurisdiction, the Senate must now pass upon the question. If the Senate believes that Robertson is not Lieutenant-Governor, the Senate will stultify itself if it permits him to aasume the position. In the absence of any adjudication on the subject, the Senate must determine the matter.” And the Senate has determined it.
On yesterday, the first day of the session, oar Sena.o; Thompson introduced a temperance bill in the Senate which provides for licers ing druggists to sell liquor for medicinal and sacramental purposes only, they to give a bond of sl,ooe, and that licenses shall be issued to other persons to sell liquors as beve ages, upon their establishing a good, moral character, and the payment of a license fee of $25 a month, in advance, £•> the county treasurer.
