SIGHT DRAFTS ON SENSE.
[From the American Commercial Traveler.} He is either a fool or a philosopher ' who can laugh at the world. In striving to please others man finds for himself the purest and most enduring of pleasures. Discontent is a raven with a poisonous beak, picking, ever picking, at the heart of man. Each and every truth antedates the universe. The wisest sage cannot formulate a new, but the simplest child may bring one to light. Conscience scorned, out of justice •will set us on to ruin ourselves. It is the self-debased mind alone that exhibits contempt for the laws of so-, ciety. , Man’s every act is a square, the sides of which present to the world a different aspect. It is, therefore, the duty of singular humanity to abstain from the performance of anything until its different effects on mankind are weighed and understood. We are pleased with the works of a great architect; we admire the creations of a grand genius; but we delight in and espouse the cause of the virtuous, and, coming in contact with his moral gifts, make them at once a part of ourselves, and are thus stimulated to arrive at a higher state of being.
Of Hope’s sweet nectar once we taste. With nimble feet away we haste ; But haste conflicting soon with hurry, We lose our way in endless worry, And straightway feel thepressin’g need Of steadfast, calm, progressive speed; And he alone may win the match Who clears the way with stern dispatch.
No Comedy for Her.
The church which Mr. and Mrs. Topnoody attend is getting up an entertainment to raise needed funds, and Topnoody was on the Committee of Arrangements. The committee met last night, and when he came home his •wife was anxious to know what had been done. “Well,” she said, “did you do anything ?” “O, yes, my dear, we outlined a program,” he said with an air of business. “What’s it like?” “Well, the chief feature is to be a play. ” “What play?” "Just the thing for amateurs, my dear; the pretty little three-act comedy, ‘Married 1 ife.’ ” “A comedy, Topnoody?” “Of course, and you are to be Mrs. Samuel Coddle, my dear.” “No, I ain’t, Topnoody,” she said, firing up till her cheeks looked like a pair of autumn leaves. “Amateur theatricals are bad enough any way you fix them, but when the amateurs are so raw that they call married life a comedy, you may count me out. I’m a professional in married life business, and I think I know tragedy from comedy when the curtain’s up. You hear my orchestra, Topnoody, and your committee may scratch my name off the list. A comedy? And with my experience ? Great heavens 1” Topnoody went to bed without giving further details of the committee’s •work.— Washington Critic.
Men and Women in Life’s Prime
Who rise unrefreshed, feel languid through the day, have little appetite, and whose faces exhibit a sallow tint, are on the short route to the grave. Unless they can effect a radical change in their condition they will not reach old age. Invigoration is the only means of their physical salvation. Upon Hostetter's Stomach Bitters they can rely to furnish them with the stamina, which is a prerequisite of health, and to remove that prime cause of continued debility, indigestion and non-assimilation of the food. We class these causes as one, since they are joint functions of one organ, the stomach, chiefly. Built up and rehabilitated with this superb restorative of vigor, the system may bid defiance to malaria, rheumatism, bladder and kidney diseases, and other maladies prone to attack the enfeebled. The Bitters not only affords a safeguard against disease of a virulent type, hut effects a- prompt reform in the condition of a drowsy or disordered liver and irregular bowels. Miss Hannah More, a celebrated writer, who died about fifty years ago, had a good way of managing tale-bear-ers. It is said that when she was told anything derogatory of another, her invariable reply was: “Come, we will go and ask if it be true.” The effect was sometimes ludicrously painful. The tale-bearer was taken aback, stammered out a qualification, or bdgged that no notice be taken of the statement; but the good lady was inexoraable; off she took the scandal-monger to the scandalized, to make inquiry and compare accounts. It is not likely that anybody ever ventured to repeat a gossipy story to Hannah More. One would think her method of treatment would be a sure cure for scandal.
Architect Edmond Legendre, 419 Sutter street., San Francisco, Cal., states that having suffered for a long time with a severe congh, and, failing to obtain any relief from doctors and the numerous preparations he took, he became alarmed. Tried Red Star Cough Cure, and one bottle entirely cured him. Even cultivated people are subject to excesses. Ten years ago the intellect of the world was bewitched with materialism. Now it is equally attracted by telegraphy and the like. Soon it will be something else. Intellectual fashions change as often as women’s dresses. The total annual shipments of dried shrimps and other marine products prepared as food or fish manure by the Chinese on the California coast and sent to China is valued at $3,132,000. Mr. Ed P. Weeds, Thetis P. 0., Stevens 00., Wash. Terr., was entirely cured of rheumatism by the use of St. Jacobs Oil. He says: “I consider it a wonderful remedy and will always speak a good word for it.”

Dr. Kimball, director of the mint, has completed his report on the production of gold and silver in the United States during 1885. The production of gold is estimated at $31,800,00 », an increase of $1,000,000 on the est mate for the calendar year 1881. The production of silver for the calendar year 18X5, calculated at the coining rate in silver dollars, is estimated at $51,030,000, against $48,800,000 in 1884. The coinage executed during the calendar year at the coinage mints consisted of 47,544,521 pieces, of the face value of $56,926,810. The number of silver dollars coined during the calendar year 1885 was 28,697,707. The director estimates the amount of gold coin in the United States on January 1, 1886, to have been $533,485,453; of silver dollars, $218,249,761; subsidiary silver, $75,034,111; or a total stock of coin of $826,779,325.

This title indicates to some extent the character and scope of the new Holiday Annual for 1887, by “A Man,” which is now in press and will be ready, oa or about the 20th inst for delivery by the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway. It is to all in ents and purposes a gift to the friends and patrons of that road. The subject is ably handled, and discussed in a clear, colloquial vein that will captivate adults and youth alike, although especially “dedicated to the boys and girls of America.” It embodies a vast amount of scient tic and practical in for nation, is profusely illustrated with diagrams, sketches, and full-page engravings from original drawings true to fact and nature—with beautiful and striking design on outside cover, printed in colors. It is a book that will challenge wide attention and comment—something choice, elegant and valuable, that will pay to read, study, discuss and preserve—and the Company have spared no expense to produce it in first-class style. A Sad Case.
“Yes,” said Jowles to Bowles, “Yellowby has been drinking hard for many years, and has at last reached a deplorable condition.” “Indeed!” said 1 owles, “has he got delirium tremens?” “Oh, no. He is never sober enough for that. He keeps just full enough all the time to avoid delirium tremens, and yet does not get drunk. He hasn’t tasted water for twenty years, and that is where the trouble is. ” “What trouble?” “Why, you see, he is afraid to look at anything he likes.” “Why so?” “For fear his mouth might water for it.” “What if it did?” “Why, don’t you see, if his mouth watered it would kill him!”— Boston Courier.
