Dr. Washburn has been re-elect-ed school trustee. Mrs. J. M. Hopkins is fully prepared to give you bargains in Millinery, etc. Mordecai F. Chilcote, Esq., has placed a new fire and burglar-proof safe ia his office. # The Chicago Grocery has been m :ved into the o d Austin House where R. F. Priest will be pleased to greet his many patrons. The certificate given Bennie Fending, of the High School graduating class, entitles him to enter the State University at Bloomington without further examination. N.'V. Cleaver’s accounts are in my hands for collection, and parties will avoid costs by calling at my office and making settlement at once. Tames W. DoutHit. The School Board will have the school grounds inclosed with an iron fence. The Commissioners should follow suit and erect a neat and substantial fence around the court house grounds.
Ralph Fendig is busily engag'd in opening out and piling up new goods, just received, for the spring trade. Call in see them. Wm. H. The G. A. R. Post exercises, last Friday evening, were interrupted by a number of ladies who routed the members thereof, took possession of the hall, and proceeded to spread a feast of good things for the veterans. The whole affair was a surprise. Senator Sellers, of Montieello, visited Rensselaer Monday. The school board has contracted for one of Yaggy’s Anatomical Studies for the use of the . chool. Prof. Reubelt and family are visiting friends in Marshall county, this State. The Nowels House has been refurnished throughout, and arranged for the accommodation and comfort of guests. The manager, Mr. Tribby, is a gentleman of experience and we wish him success.
The anniversary exercises of the I. O. O. F., at the Opera House, last Wednesday, were highly entertaining and gratifying. The addresses of Secretary of State Myers and M. L. Spitler, Esq., are referred to in eulogistic terms. Ladies, we have secured a firstclass milliner for the coming season of 1886, Mrs. Carrie Plielps of Chicago, who is a first-class artist. Come and examine gaods and work before purchasing elsewhere Hemphill & Hoan. Secretary of State Myers gave gave us a pleasant call Wednesday. Sam Nich jls has been appointed station agent at Rose Lawn, and Emerson Reeve takes the position of night operator at this place. In the circuit court, Tuesday, Lewis Mosier, of Keener township, plead guilty to the charge of «arrying a deadly weapon. Fined $1 and costs. On the same day Talby, the Lafayette boy, plead guilty to charge of pettit larceny. Fined $1 and costs and given two hours in county jail. Selling all our Dry Goods at cost to close them out. John G. Keynolds’ application for licen e to sell liquors in Rensselaer was granted to-day. Notice to the Public. The firm of Hemuhill & Honan has dissolved by mutual consent, Mrs. S. A. Hemphill withdrawing from the firm. The name of the firm will continue the same, Mr. James F. Hemphill becoming the senior member. We respectfully solicit your patronage in the old lines. The first certificate of entry as - econd class matter at the post-of-fice at Rensselaer, in accordance j with section 199 of the Postal Laws j and Regulations, was given by Postmaster Bates, on Monday, to the publisher of The Message.— This paper is the only one in Rensselaer that has ever complied with the law in this particula,, although the law has been in operation sLxce 1879.—The Message. The above is an admission, then, that “the publisher of The Message,” who was transferred from the guano beds of Turk Island to the post office in Rensselaer, the yearfabove mentioned, where, ha clung like a leech up to within a few months, during all these years was either ignorant of, or engaged in willful violation of the section which makes it the duty of postmasters to direct the attention of publishers thereto. We remember distinctly, on first s eing the announcement by some papers that they “entered as second ©lass matter,” we inquired of the then postmaster—present publisher of The Message—if that procedure .was required by law, and lie gave us an emphatic no.
