Railroad Tie Plantations.
Hon. R. W. Phipps, Forestry Commissioner of Ontario, in a letter from Southern Kansas to the Toronto Globe, writes: “One railroad board here, knowing that the growing of wood, when set about in earnest, is neither a slow nor a difficult task, has established in Kansas the largest artificial plantation of forest trees in North America. These railway gentlemen themselves gave out the contract for planting over a square mile of land with young saplings of the catalpa and ailanthus, and their president, observing the success of their experiment, and impressed with its probable excellent financial results, has had planted at his own expense, as a speculation, as much more. These are situated near the little town of Farlington, Kan.” In every land and clime, the merits of St. Jacobs Oil as the only conqueror of pain, are being acknowledged by the press and people.
Tornado Points Located.
In a report to the French Academy of Sciences of the 172 tornadoes recorded in the United States in 1884, Mons. Faye considers it established that there is a definite portion of an area of low barometer most favorable to tornadoes. The Signal Service reporters are now endeavoring to determine this “dangerous octant” still more accurately. A memorable day in the history of tornadoes was February 19, 1884, when no less than forty-five were recorded in the Southeastern States, attended with a loss of 800 lives, 2,500 injured, 10,000 houses and buildings destroyed, and 15,000 people left homeless.

Curious Request.
Editors are constantly in receipt of curious letters. Here is one of them, sent to the editor of Harper's Magazine the other day. It was a lady who wrote that she was dying, and that her physicians told her she would be dead before the conclusion of Howells’ story, “Indian Summer.” then running in the Monthly. She was very much interested in it, and did not wapt to die until she knew how it was going to end, and she begged the editor to let her read the advance sheets, that she might die happy.
She Wanted to Save Time.
Little Alice had been very sick, and was taken by her mother, with her twin sister, to a seaside hotel for a change of air. Here she gained strength rapidly, and her appetite increased so that she was no sooner through one meal than she was looking longingly forward to the next. One day, hearing that her supper would be ready in a few minutes, she turned to her sister and said: “Let’s ask a bless'ng now, Janie, so as not to have to wait when we get to the table.”— New York Tribune.
What Locality Is Exempt
From malaria? In city and suburb, village and hamlet, in the mining districts of the 'West, the bottom lands of the South, in regions teeming with the fruits of husbandry, in trackless wastes inhabited by half-naked savages, it exists. But travelers, sojourners, old settlers, all who are liable to it, can uproot from the system the diseases to which it gives birth, or prevent thorn, with Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters. Chills and fever, bilious remittent, dumb ague and ague cake, are each and all overcome by this potent and searching specific. It is not less efficacious for liver complaint, dyspepsia and costiveness, ailments not unfrequently complicated with malarial attacks. Rheumatism, kidney and bladder troubles, and a want of vital strength, are also remediable by it persistent use. Appetite and sleep, always’seriously impaired by the nervous disturbance and biliousness consequent upon fever and ague, are invariably restored by the Bitters.
Melancholy All Around.

The Great German Physician.
The remarkable phase in the practice of Dr. Peter W. Schmidt (frequently called Dr. Pete) is, he never asked one to describe their disease but tells each one their trouble without asking a question. His success is phenomenal. His practice enormous. He is sought after by hundreds wherever he goes, because he cures when every other physician and remedy have failed. He has allowed his great medicines, Golden Seal Bitters and Lung Food for Consumption, to be offered to the suffering, and we assert without fear of successful contradiction that there is no disease they will not cure. Thousands of bottles have been sold. Thousands of brokendown and discouraged invalids saved. Send to Golden Seal Bitters Company, Holland City, Mich., for Facts for the Million! Free.
