POWDERLY FOR GOVERNOR.
The Fenn sylvan la Democrats Think Seriously of Nominating Him. [Pittsburgh special.] Leading Democrats in this city are talking of nominating General Master Workman Powderly for Governor. They think he could carry the labor vote as well as the Democratic, which would insure his election. James 11. Hopkins, who has been spoken of for the position, positively declines, and his friends say he will throw his inlluence in Powderly’s favor, The only other prominent Democrat now mentioned for the office is ex-Senator Buckalew',- but as he would be antagonized by the Bars© faction his chcanes are slim. There is very little doubt that Mr. Powderly will be honored with the nomination, if ho will consent to accept. He w ill be sounded on the matter in a short time.
Pullitzer, of the N. Y. World, has resigned his seat in Congress. Interference with his editorial duties is the reason assigned. Capt. McGrath, a Republican, for the past ninete n years superintendent of mails in Chicago, has been removed, and the Republicans, as usual, squirm and kick t ereat. <4 • ► * The Rep ;blican administrations have been very considerate of the interests of manufacturing monopolies, in placing a high tariff on products, on the plea of protecting home industry, and again in refusing to impose a tariff on the importation of cheap labor to compete with our home laborers in their struggles to earn a livelihood. Selling all our Dry Goods at cost to close them out. Come and get a bargain. Hemphill &H. Tariff Reduction.—Mr. Morrison has introduced a bill in the House for the partial emancipalimof the business and* industry of this count'’y fomth 3 thralldom of a monopoly tariff. The bill adds many raw mateiials to the free list and is expected to reduce the revenue by about $24,000,000 a year, which is now the extent of the surplus. Money taken from the people, not required by the government for legitimate expenditures is generally Wisted and not infrequently spent for corrupt purposes. The republican members of Congress will no loubt be arrayed in opposition to the reduction of taxation proposed in this bill on the false assumption that it will operate disastrously on “home industry.” As many items of raw material are comprised in it, the c’oak under which they seek cover will be easily removed by the people. Pass the bill.

Small Requittal for Great Service. —The great War Governor, Mr. Curtin, publicly declared, on the day that General Hancock was buried, that if he had been wounded an hour earlier in the memorable battle of Gettysburg the battle would have been won by General Lee fnstead of by General Meade. No one is more familiar with the real history of Gettysburg than ex-Governor Curtin; and when he said, in effect, that it was General Hancock who saved Pennsylvania from being overrun and Philadelphia from being looted by Lee’s Confederate troops, he declared the truth of history.— T u st te and city from whichJGeneral Hancock drove back the hungry invading forces of the Confederacy should have enough gratitude and dignity to care for the widow of the great soldier who stood between them and their enemies. The fund for the relief of Mrs. Hancock, the first, eontribi - t m to which wa na’.e m this , city, is still exceedingly small in amount. It should be unnecessary to say that it becomes Philadelphia to make it adequate, and du it promptly. —Philadelphia Inquirer.
