BETTER THAN A GOLDEN LEG.
"Miss Kilmansegg and her golden leg/ ■will never be forgotten so long as the genius of Thomas Hood, with all his gen* tie humor and tender pathos is remembered, but it is doubtful if any one will ever envy the heroine of that poem her unique limb, which brought with it so many misfortunes. In this prosaic age a good strong leg of flesh, bone, and muscle is much to be preferred, whether its possessor be a professional pedestrian or a solid unassuming citizen. It is to this last class that Mr. M. P. Schrock, of 672 West Lake street, Chicago, belongs. Mr. Shrock is a well-known dry goods merchant, and counts himself fortunate in having a pair of good strong legs. For one of his legs he has a peculiar regard, as he came near losing it through rheumatism. Athlophoros saved it for him, however, and for that invaluable remedy he now cherishes an almost equal regard. The ttory is well told by Mr. Schrock in his own words: “During the Spring of 1884 I was stricken with rheumatism in its very worst form, »nd was confined to my bed entirely helpless for about four weeks. My leg pained me so intensely that I could not let it rest on the bed without some support. So I had a pulley attached from the ceiling and to that a sling was fastened. I could rest my leg in this, changing the height, and in that manner I managed to obtain some little relief. During the four weeks I lay in bed I tried many remedies without avail. Finally I made a change and employed physi - cians. They tried their very best to give me relief, but could not. Instead of getting better, I was growing worse. “My doctor finally decided that it would be necessary to make an incision in my thigh, and if there was not a marked improvement in my condition from that operation, that amputation of my leg would be required. This, as you may well imagine, discouraged and disheartened me beyond measure. About this time my wife noticed in a Richmond, Ind., paper, for which we subscribe, the name of a personal friend who had been cured by the use of Althophoros. She called my attention to it, and I said at once, ‘Get a bottle and try it.’ She bought a bottle, the doctor was discharged and we began using it immediately 7. I experienced great relief in the first few doses. In two days after I began with the medicine I was in my store attending to my business, and I have not been troubled with rheumatism since.” “How much Athlophoros did you use for this remarkable cure, Mr. Schrock?” “About one and a third bottles. The remaining two-thirds of a bottle is still unused at my house.” “Don’t you think it was p, very quick cure for so bad a case?” was asked. “I certainly think it not only quick,” answered Mr. Schrock, “but wonderful, and I feel that I cannot say too much for Athlophoros. I never let an opportunity pass when I can recommend it, as it surely did everything for me.” Mr. Schrock is now in the best of health, and considers himself a living example of what Athlophoros can do for those whom rheumatism has brought even to death’s door. If you cannot get Athlophoros of your druggist, we will send it, exijress paid, on receipt of regular price—one dollar per bottle. We prefer that you buy it from your druggist, but if ho hasn’t it, do not be persuaded to try something else, but order at once from us, as directed. Athlophoros Co., 112 Wall street, New York.
She Knew Why She Wept.
Mrt. Beltwhistle's husband had died, and she was crying over the coffin in a most fervid and impassioned manner. “Poor dear! poor dear!” said the pastor, sympathetically, patting her on the back. “We all have our crosses to bear, sister, and the burden is lightened by the helping hand of our loving Father. ” “800 hoo! boo hoo!” moaned the widow. "Don’t take on so, sister. Be calm.” “800 hoo! boo hoo!” continued the grief-stricken relict. “Don’t cry; that won’t bring Rim back.” “800 hoo. I know it. I —l wouldn’t be crying if I thought—if I thought it would. I—l—l’ve got to do something—boo hoo—to keep up appearances. Go away. Let me weep. 800 hoo! boo hoo!” The pastor, sadly, didn’t have any further Condolence to offer .—Merchant Traveler.
A Brutal Conductor.
“I can’t let this girl travel over this road on that half-fare ticket, ” said the new conductor to the Widow Flapjack. “Why not ? What is the matter with my little girl?” ■ “She is no child. She is more than half grown.” “Well, if that don’t beat everything then I’ll give it up. Here poor little Mamie has been traveling over this road on a child’s ticket for the last ten years, and now all at once you say she is no child. That’s a new way to worry the traveling public.” She paid full fare, and then the diminutive girl in the corner pulled herself out, so to speak, like a marine telescope. —Texas Sijtings. We see occasionally reports of tapeworms in nursing infants. These cases are doubtless due to a common notion that it is a good thing for a baby to give it a piece of raw meat to suck and chew on. This is folly any way. A baby is better without it, and the danger of its swallowing an encysted tapeworm ought to abolish the practice—were this danger more generally known. —Dr. Footers Health Monthly. Important. Families can live better for less money at the Grand Union Hotel than at any other first-class hotel in the oity.
Not Symptoms, but the Disease.
It would seem to be a truth appreciated by all, and especially by professors of the healing art, that to remove the disease, not to alleviate its symptoms, should be the chief aim of medication. Yet in how many instances do we see this truth admitted in theory, ignored in practice. The reason that Hostetter's Stomach Bitters is successful in so many cases, with which remedies previously tried were inadequate to cope, is attributable to the fact that it is a medicine which reaches and removes the causes of the various maladies to which it is adapted. Indigestion, fever and ague, liver complaint, gout, rheumatism, disorder of the bowels, urinary affections and other maladies are not palliated merely, but rooted out by it. It goes to the fountain head. It is really, not nominally, a radical remedy, arid it endows the system with an amount of vigor which is its best protection against disease.
A Beautiful and Curious Old Mexican City.
A correspondent of the San Francisco Chronicle, who has visited Jalapa, writes: “Few cities in the w'orld are so favorably situated as Jalapa, preserving eternal summer, with little change of atmosphere, from year to year, yet sufficiently elevated to escape the banetul vapors of the tierria caliente (hot lands) which it overlooks. It is par excellence a paradise for the artist, the naturalist, the huuter, and the healthseeker, and is the loveliest of resorts, both for winter and summer. People from the far north come down here to escape the winter’s cold; the citizens of Vera Cruz, Cordova, and other feverhaunted districts come up in summer time to enjoy the refreshing breezes and secure immunity f. om disease, and invalids from all parts of the liemifphore, especially consumptive, are sent here to recuperate at any time of year. In short, the ancient mountain town, where—alike at all seasons—brilliant birds sing litanies and flowers vavfc perfumed censers, is the quaintest and loveliest spot on the continent. The vanilla bean, with its valuable extract and volatile oil, is indigenous to the locality and thrives in especial luxuriance in these evergreen forests that hide the ancient cities of the Totonaca, who supplied the article to the Aztec kings 400 years ago. Professor Bell believes that some invention will soon be perfected which will enable persons to see by electricity. Xlte Nineteenth century Club is an organization that will consist of an equal number of men and women. It is hardly to bo expected that they will agree on all subjects: but it can surprise no one to learn that Dr. Pierce’s “Golden Medical Discovery” is unanimously pronounced the most successful remedy extant for pulmonary consumption, as has been demonstrated in hundreds of cases; it positively arrests this disease and restores health and strength, if administered in its early stages. The Great German Physician.
The remarkable phase in the practice of Dr. Peter W. Schmidt (frequently called Dr. Pete) is, he never asked one to describe their disease but tells each one their trouble without asking a question. His success is phenomenal. His Sractice enormous. He is sought after by hunreds wherever he goes, because he cures when every other physician and remedy have failed. He has allowed his great medicines, Golden Seal Bitters and Lung Food for Consumption, to be offered to the suffering, and we assert without fear of successful contradiction that there is no disease they will not cure. A Woman’s Age.
A woman, It Is said, is no older than she looks.
