To the many, friends in Rens, eeleaer and vicinity whose repeated acts of kindness during Ana’s long illness helped smooth her pathway to the tomb, we ret turn our heartfelt thanks. We appreciate the respect, esteem and sympathy manifested by the large attendance on the funeral ceremomonies. The many letters, too, received from associates, ccmpnn. ions and friends in this and other States, while they do not fill the aching void, ara consoling, as all bear witness to her lovely character. “Your Brother” does not love the “Republican” who writes for the “Sentinel”—not very much.— Not unless he could make a “wheeler” out of him. But then our ‘‘Republican” does not like the mt - thods of “Your Brother” in ‘ooseing” nominations any more than he does the attempt to defeat the nominee with “fraudulent tickets. ’ Our “Republican” is a sort of a straight “cuss,” if he is a Republican.
About the P. O.
Monticello Herald: We regret to note that a Mr. Bates has been appointed postmaster at Itensselaer. AVe regret it, because we had hoped that on- old neighbor J. AV. McEwen would receive the appointment. He has been true to his party through thick and thin and has for several years been publishing a straight democratic newspaper in a county where his party is largely in the minority and consequently his support has been meager at best. Wo believe in rewards for meritorious service and that “offensive partisans” friendly to the administration should hold the offices. Therefore Bro. McEwen was justly entitled to the postoffice at Rensselaer and we are sorry his claim has been ignored and another chosen. Delphi Journal: We are not much interested in the action of the present administration, but we had hoped that our old friend, J. W. McEwen, of the Rensselaer Sentinel, would receive the appointment of Postmaster, as he has worked long and faithfully for his party. Many Democratic editors of this district have been rewarded. Why not he ? Kentland Gazette: Non-partisan lightning has struck Rensselaer, but some way or other it did not ft.’ike Bro. McEwenjff the Den o crat, as was expected. N. S. Bates was the man who had the “poll long enough to reach the persimmon” and got the postoffice at that place.
White County Democrat: N. S. Bates has been appointed postmaster at Rensselaer, vice H. E. James, commission expired- Mr. Bates is one of the staunchest democrats in Jasper jcounty, and the appointment is a good one, alt’, o’ we can’t help feeling that our old friend, Jas. W. McEwen of the Sentinel, should have been the appointee. Mr. McEwen has run the Sentinel for years without any of the patronage of the county, and hard as is the luck of newspaper men generally, as been more than usually so.— While we regret that our old friend has not been honored with the appointment, we congratulate Mr. Bates on his good fortune and Rensselaer on securing an efficient postmaster. To our brethren of the press in this district who have so kindly and freely urged our claims for the position to which we aspired, we tender our sincere thanks.
WARTENA PAYS THE PENALTY.
Quite a number of people arrived on the trains yesterday and this morning, and before the time set for the execution Rensselaer presented a rather lively appearance, although it was a matter of comment that a large proportion of the crowd was from distant localities. CONDENSED ACCOUNT OF THE CRIME. Wartner is a native of Holland, came to this country a few years since, and located uear French Landing, in this county. He has left a wife and four children. His principal occupation was fiishing, from which he derived a precarious livelihood. John Dreger, his neighbor, owned a small farm and some cattle, kept house by himself, his wife having died, and sometimes boarded with Wartner, frequently assisting him, and proving to be a friend in need. At the time of the murder Wartner had Dreger go with him to the Kankakee river for fish, loading Dreger’s wagon with the implement of death, and the articles intended for use in concealment of the deed. On reaching tke river, v artner struck Dredger down with the butt end of his gun, mad sure of his death, then loading the body with the traps he had taken along for that purpose, sank it to the bottom of the river. Returning home, Wartner took possession of Dreger’s property, clai into have paid for it a check from the old country for $375, and that Dreger had returned to the old country. Brainard, a trapper, on the 29th of October, 1884 found the body of the man, which proved to be that of Dreger. After the identification of the body Wartner was arrested, and on November 4th, 1884, made a confession in which he stated that he was impelled to the deed by destitution and poverty. At the January term, 1885, of the Jasper Circuit Court, on plea of guilty, without intervention of jury, Judge Ward assessed the death penalty. This was set aside by the Supreme Court Tried by a jury, October term, 1885, he entered a plea of insanity, but the jury found him guilty, assessed his punishment at death and Judge Ward designated today, Friday, February 26, 1886, as the date of execution, and Weibren Wartner has suffered the penalty f outraged law.
THE CLOSING PROCEEDINGS.
At 11:20 the gates to the enclosure were opened and those holding tickets were admitted, numbering some 300. At 11:30 the death warrant was read to the condemned man, and at 11:40 the procession left the jail and mounted the scaffold. AVaYtena walked to the scaffold, assisted by a man on either side, and was given a chair. He sat down, and facing the spectators, and made a general denial of the < rimo for which lie was to surfer death, crying out, “Good gentlemen, lam innocent! God help me, I am inncant!” He spoke very kindly of Sh riff Yeom n, and said, “This good man must kill me I know that, but he don’t like to do it. He has be n good to me, and I thank him.” A short prayer, in English, wa offered by I Rev. B. F. Ferguson, followed by a prayer in German, by Rev. Vaness. At 12 o’clock sharp the drop was sprung and at 12:20 AVartena was pronounced dead, his neck being broken. The doctors examined his brains and and pronounced them sound and healthy. Sheriff Yeoman is awarded great praise for the good order which prevailed. Sheriffs Harper, of Montgomery county; Stewart, of White, Burton, of Pulaski; Wells, of Lake, and McCutcheon, of Tippecanoe, were in attendabce.
Simon’s dog, a Goodland (?) Republican, makes wry faces at us, pouts and says naughty things, all i ecause we invited him to trot his master out. Now, personally, we rank Simon as one of best friends, but as the Democracy have been carrying this Senatorial district for lo these many years, trot him ont if you want to see him sail up Salt River. Bpeeial Invitation! — Everybody is respectfully invited io call and price my goods, and I will guarantee that out of every 26 customers 24 will be bound te buy of me, as I have reduced my entire stock to such prices that they will feel constrained to purchase unless they have money to throw away. — I mean business, and am determined to secure, by the above method, new friends.
