A SUMMER TEACHERS’ NORMAL INSTITUTE,
Our radical friends can't yet get he ‘hang’ as to what constitutes “offensive partisanism.” But they will understand by-and-by. Judge Foraker has been renominated by the Ohio Republican State convention for Governor. — He was defeated in the last gubernatorial contest in that State by the present incumbent, and can be again if w.se counsels and harmony prevail in the Democratic ranks. “Billee” Chandler, late republican Secretary of the Navy, was badly ‘left’ in the recent contest for the caucus nomination for United States Senator, in New Hampshire“Billee” deserves his fate. He belongs to that grade of politicians that believe in purchase, bribery* intimidation, force, corruption of any kind to achieve party triumph, —even to the theft of the Presidential office.
It is announced that “Jim Blaine> of Maine,” the late ‘plumed knight’ of the Republican party, intends making a vigorous canvass of Ohio in the interest ot the Republican candidate for Governor. In that event we suggest that the Democracy engage J udge Turpie to follow him with the evidence collated forjthe defense in the libel suit, and which Jim prevented from reaching a Hoosier jury by the withdrawal of bis suit for damages and character. - **■ ■ Bro. Mellish, of the Fowler Era, quotes the following: “John A. Logan is a humbug.”— Benton Review. The object in view, being inter, terpreted, is to say: “There, now, Johnnie, oppose Eastburn’s confirmation as post-master!” Evidently, however, Mr. Logan is taking no stock in th at direction. He no doubt fears the influence of Democratic patronage over the political integrity and loyalty to party of his followers, and would therefore prefer that they all be urned out. Referring to the attempt to stop the coinage of silver or its deraonitization, the Chicago Inter-Ocean recurs to Sir Archibald Allison’s notion that the withdrawal from the Roman Empire of the supplies of the precious metals, which under the Caisars had made it prosperous, did more to plunge the whole world into the night of the dark ages than either of the invasionsof the Northern barbarians, the licentiousness of the wealthier Romans or the general reign of superstition. • John A. Logan said recently:— “I hope every Republican who asks to be retained by this administration will be turned out of office.—• I have received letter after letter from Republicans in office urging me to exert myself to have them retained. I shall not humiliate myself in that way. I would rather help to get Republicans of that sort out. In fact it is strange to • me that a Republican would ask a Democratic administration to keep him in office. No Republican wo’d ask Cleveland to appoint him, if he was out of office. A petition for retention stands on the same principle. It is virtually asking a Democrat for an appointment. If a Republican would not ask for an office he should not ask to be re. tained in one. If he is hold ing an office and is asked to remain on achis faithful services, it i thing. In that oase he ght to accept, but he is Tong in asking to be re-
