Goodluud Herald: Tlie advance agent of the Hompty Dumpty company borrowed 50 cents at this place to take him to Remington and at the latter town increased his prospects and borrowed five dollars. We are the fifty-cent fool. Who is the ignoramus at Remington? Seward of ladastry. A poor friendless lad night bars bean teen wandering along the streets looking for employment He presently halted in front or a butcher ah op, and. walking boldly up to the proprietor, awed for a job. There was something in the young man's frank, honest countenance, which •truck the proprietor favorably. “ Not afraid of hard work r he asked, "No," responded the led with a trembling voice. '* I have supported my mot ~ r u.d two sisters for five years by hard \*. rk. ' He was put on trial at $5 a week mauling leathery beef, and his sturdy frame and healthy constitution oame in good play. One day an old lady came in to got some beef, and the proprietor iold him to attend to the customer. "A tenderloin steak, if you please," said she. 44 Here’s a cut that nobody but the first families get,” responded the boy smilingly as lie sliced off four pounds of lough round and cast it with a heavy hand on the scales, jamming it down with a quick, dexterous movement, until the iudicator marked s’x even pounds. Then be snatched it off before the delicate machinery, used to weigh beef, had time to recoil. “Sixpounds and a half, madam,” he said, looking her square iu the face with bis clear blue eyes. The proprietor of the stall called him iu that night, and remarking that he had watched his course carefully, added that as a reward for his quick, comprehensive grasp of the business he would raise his salary to $25 per week. This shows the advantage of doing everything well, and when the boy’s mother back in New Jersey hears of his success there will be joy in that household. Young men starting out in life should learn to adapt themselves to their surroundings and never let an opportunity pass .—Salt Lake Tribune.

An Ohio merchant who kept three clerks, each one of whom made his own change and had free access to the mon-ey-drawers, was the other day asked by a commercial traveler why he did not keep a cashier to receive all moneys. “Cost too much,” was the reply. “But are your clerks honest?” “Perfectly honest. ” “Have you anv objection to mv trying them?” “Certainly uot; go ahead in any way you Avish.” The traveler Avent away, but in about three hours he returned and said in a loud voice so that all might hear: “When I Avas here this forenoon I paid you a bogus quarter by mistake. In case yon find it in counting up tonight, lay it aside and I’il redeem it.” Then the traveler, accompanied by the merchant, took position where the back door and the alley could be kept in view, and in less than ten miwute.2 out came the head clerk and emptied a handful of silver on the head of a barrel and pawed it over. The bogus quarter was not there. He returned to the store and out came the second clerk 1 and went through the same programme. He was followed by the third, and after I he disappeared the merchant calmly observed: * “I’ve been waiting thirteen years for trade to pick up, and I rather think I’ll try the cashier system.” Boots & Shoes!—R.
