Quick, of Barkley township, a fatal ccident occured, by the burning to teath of has ten year old daughter. Vhile Mr, and. Mrs. Quick were feedig the stock and milking the cows, the irl was left in 'the house. She took he broom and fanned the fire, in the ook stove.; while thus engaged her lothes caught fire. There being no. »ne present to help her, she ran for he barn, some sixty yards from the ouse, where her father was unharnessing the horses. Willie Quick, his on, being in the mow of the barn, at his time, seeing his sister coming, all n fire, said “fire”, and his father

Mr. £uick went to her rescue and with uperhuman effort soon tore away the emainder of-clothes that the fire had est, but she was very badly burned. Jr. Washburn, of .Rensselaer, was drought and did all he could, but she lied on the :3rd inst., at 10 o’clock in he morning.

General Carnahan and The New Orleans Exposition
Mr. James R. Carnahan, ilndiana 8 jommissioner to the New 'OrlaaiM. Exjosition, has returned to Indianapolis. )f the Exposition he told a News reporter : “Ina fifteen -minutes wdlk, he said, you see tbe -whole world. .You see people of every nationality and the products of every country in. the-world. The exhibits and the arrangement of he dislay are far ahead of the centennial. A visit to ? the govern ment.and state building is alone worth ‘the Jcip to New Orleans to any man. ’ I would advise visitors, however, not to gockntil February, as the displays will-then all be in position” General Carnahan says the Indiana exhibits \will be second to that of no State. ‘Several thousand square feet are covered wilk Indiana grains, grasses, -potatoes, fruits, .woods, building stones, and pre-historic relics.

At a recent meeting of the State Board of Education authority was given to the! County Superintendents of the State to hold examinations for teachers’ state 1 ektificates- The examination willfbe divided into three parts, and the <queslions prepared by the State Board will be presented to applicants on the last Saturdays of February, March and AprtL Applicants will be examined as follows: On the last Saturday of Feb.—ln Arithmetic, Grammar. Physiology, Geo erapby, Physics and U. 8. History. On the last Saturday in March.—ln Algebra, Reading ScSence of Teaching, Phpsical Geography. Zoology, U - 8 Constitution and Moi al Science. On the laet Saturday ta April—ln Geometry, Orthography* Rhet* oricj Botany, General History and Penmanship. Applicants for State Certificates must have taught school not kss than fortysight n onths, of which not less than sxteen shall have bem in Indiana.— hey shall present to the county Supertendeot, before entering upoa the exmi nation satisfactory evidence of good moral character, and professional ability, and pay the sum of five dollars, each the sum prescribed by law, which in no case can be refunded. The manuscripts, fees and testimonials will be sent immediately to the Superintendent ot Public Instruction. and there be examined and graded ny the -tate Board of Education. Certificates will be granted to applicants who make a' general average of seventy-five per cent, and do not tall below sixty pei cent. In xnv subject.
