Ery to b Sentinel: In glancing over I the colutns of the Republican of the ! 25 inst, I notice an article to which I | shall have to reply, in&as-much as it I attacks m«. The writer says: A great number of Republicans bad assembled last Saturday evening, at Rose Bud Bchool House, to to an addrese by W. B. Austiu; but owing to the lateness of staitiug, the speaker did not arrive in time to make an extended address, ana an old fashioned love, feast was Indulged in by those present, Antiquity McEwen. Boss Nowels and the young mau who is reading law with M. F. Chileote, Esq-, were there for the evident purpose of performing Southern pranks in a Northern community, by intimidating the meeting and speaker. But after reviewing t e resolute Republicans oT Union tp., present, they concluded that “discretion was the better part of valor“ and wisely refrained from disturbing the meeting.
As to the extended address, Mr. Austin did not speak at all, as can be ptoven by all present at the meeting, and as to the Southern pranks in a Northern co mmunity by intimidating the meeting and speaker,” is concerned; I with others wen l there to hear Mr. Thompson’s line of argument, (as he was announced to speak) and we did not by word or action act in a manner that would call for the article in the Republican. We attended strictly to business, which can be substantiated by Mess John E. Alter, A. M. Munden, Frank Gant, Jacob R. Wilcox, Stepnen T. Comer, Clark MColly, Benjamin MColly, and by all others present: And as to the discretion part, I may say that I have been raised and grown up . with these people, and have taught many who were there in the schools of the township, and have never d.d aught in that community that woald requite me to use discretion on such occasions, and I can oaly account for the article in the Republican on the theory that it is the production of a jealous and en-» vious mind, who thinks that hops but him and those who chose to think as he does, have any rights i n the School House. It is the outcrying of that spirit of selfishness and insanity which prompted Guiteau to assassin nat ■ President Garfield, and the author who ever he may be be, if a sane person, knows that nearly the entire article is false and was written for poiitical effect, and I wish to be understood when 1 brand the author, (whoever he may he) as a lUr and one unworthy the confidence of a peace loving community.
