George L. Ruffin (colored) has been confirmed as Justice of the Charlestown (Mass) District court. Hon. W. M. Springer, of Hlinois, announces himself a candidate for Speaker ot the House of Representatives, and claims three votes from his State. At the suggestion of Republican members of the next Congress, Representa-tive-elect Phelps, of New Jersey, has written to ex-Speaker Keifer. asking that he refuse a
of new name* for all positions, and, secondly, a healing of all difference* In the party and complete erasure of the faction line, as on this the future success depends. A tariff-reform mam meeting in New York was presided over by Rdv. Henry Ward Beecher, who pronounced the protective system terribly oppressive to the poor men of the country.
