The reason Is that the curiosity hunters took up so much time of the officials of the medical museum as to interfere with the work. An attempt was made to smuggle opium into Snn Francisco by hiding it in ordinary blocks of wood hollowed out and covered with a thick coat of oil and grease. The blocks were placed under the gangway of a steamer so as to support it and mislead the customhouse officers. A protruding screw exposed the fraud, and SI,OOO worth of the drug was seized.
