After my coming to the East I saw a great deal of him. He seemed to love to spend his time with the Army of the Potomac, and was always at my headquarters when possible, and I never heard him talk seriously about any- ' thing that he did not illustrate the strong point he wanted to make by an anecdote, always appropriate, always clear, always such that might be repeated here or in any society. It is my firm conviction many of the anecdotes attributed to Mr. Lincoln were never utterediby him. All that I ever heard were -illustrative of the point he wanted to make clear, and I am told that this was/his course at the bar as a lawyer. When he wanted to make a strong point he illustrated it by an anecdote.
