BARKLEY TOWNSHIP INSTITUTE.
The fourth and last session of Teachers’ Institute in jthis Township was held February 10th, at Ceuter School House, and proved to be the most interesting and profitable of the season. Nine teachers;Mr. J. E. Alter, visiting teacher, und 15 visitors present; After the usual preliminaries of opening, Mr. A . McEU'resh began the regular exercises with an excellent paper on the subject— “ What J attention should the study ot Authors and their most prominent works receive in Fourth and Fifth Grades?” This subject was followed by ‘Elocutionary Drill with Grammar Grade,’ by Mr. James Pierce, who gave some good practical rules and suggestions. Miss Ida Koons next gave “Solutions and Explanations of Pioblem3,” on board, which was followed by lengthy and animated discussions, in which many took part. ‘ The Changes of Abe Moon and Eclipses” were well described by Miss Belle Koons, after which the Institute was adjourned for one hour, during which time a tempting and ample dinner was spread, and partaken of by all. Exercises of the P. M. session began by Mr. Brusnahan on the subject of “Artificial Stimulants, and their effects on the System.” M. M. Tyler followed with Class Drill in History. “Tides aud Ocean Currents” were so clearly explained by Miss Vena Bouk, that in imagination we could see the ris ing and falliug ot the tides, aud trace the meanderings ot the various currents thro’ the trackless oeeans. Lizzie Richardson then read a paper on “The Three Objects of the Recitation.”
The next IS minutes were profitably spent in discussing some difficult con structions in Grammar. After Miscellaneous Business, Critics’ Report, and reading minutes of session the hour still being early,- Mr. f. E. Alter proposed to devote a few minutes to a ‘ ciphering match,'* which was the most exciting and enjoyable exercise of tbe day, and for which the Institute extended to Mr, Alter a hearty vote of thanks.
