THE TAX BURDEN. Seventeen years after the close of the rebellion, says the N. Y. Sun, we are still living under a system of taxation devised to meet the enormous demands of the civil war waged to preserve the Union. The Commissioner of Interna! Revenue boasts that he has collected $743,831,071 during the past t-ix years, and $146,520, 273 for the past fiscal year. He considers these great achievements, and regards as excellent the system which levies an annual tax of nearly three dollars a head on every man. woman ; and child in the United States, black, - white or mixed This iaqnisitorial ' bureau, which offers a premium o*n I perjury, and which incites bad blood and bad faith among the people, keeps ub a star ding army of over four thousand office-holders', maintained at a cos: as more than five uaii-li.i.-.s a y--ar, ail of whom turn out on election lay and ate contributors to Jay Hubbell’s campaign fund. The existing tariff was framed for the benefit of monopolies; It admits the luxuries of the rich with a nominal duty, and taxes every article of the poar with a crushing discrimination. No man dares ta deny its glaring iniquities The most pronounced protectionists admit the jobbery, perpetrated undri cover of procured law. What have the majority done to correct this flagrant injustice? They created a commission ostensibly to collect infu ma'ion which was already accessible, but really to.coniinuc the odious law, by which combination tliiives and monopoly is protected. With cv.iv fact wrhbi reach which any commisson can possibly obtain the Repubii.-ai s under cover of a false : it terse. refus' d to touch the tniff, and p i it beyond the reach of refoim during the present Administration. “ANOTHER INCONSEQUENTIAL LETTER.
Editor Reptblicam. -Sir: You voU unteer Tour “foil consent” for me to write another letter! What “asinine assurance —T never yet asked the consent of “doesticks,” and why . should I require that of his “Damphool?” You consider certain expression in my former letter as libelous, and scy, “But as we believe him to he in the habit of using words whose meaning he dees not understand, we pa>B it by with contempt ” Will you per init me to say that I had then and have now a full understanding of t! e words used, and their legal import, and I now repeat that your “scurril- ' ous attack” upon me was uncalled ’ ’’or. and was only made by you for j “pcitisan” purposes, and I w ill suggest that the courts am open, arfti if | you feci ’hat your character or reputation have been injured, you have I your remedy, but I must olunteer ; the legal proposition, for which no fees are askec. thaL should a case of that nature be adjudicated, i jury , might be placed in a dilemma to as ; certain whether you had, or had not | ‘any reputation to injure? And as to , my use oi words whose meaning is at i all vague or hard to understand. I i hope you wiil not deem me egotistic i when I say that I have always be«n j noted for using language so plain that a “way-faring man, though a fool” need not err. and if you had a.® mucn brain as a “Woodpecker” you eoultl not fail to und rstand me You term tny letter “inconsequentinl.” and yet rack your demented brain in writing n column and a 1 a!f of par ■ nsan “taffy’’ in reply, which if writs ten by a ten year old schoolboy might j be appropriately headed. "The wail of the damned—Republican.” My acetic Brother. th< lions skiu that concealed your real nature can no longer perform that office: you undertook to roar, and the result was. the ludicrous bray of “yourself.” 'n the Republican ring you are “one of them damned literary fellers,” who seem to say,,l am Sir Oracle, and when I ope*my lips let no dog bark ” You undoubtedly thought you could get in a little work for your party by a scurrilous attack on me, but your weapon has proved to be a boomerang, and here you propose “to waste no more time.
My crusty friend, if you .w so ”ory solicitous regarding the “common sense’’ and ‘common decency” of those who attend temperance meetings, and would not have them outraged by any reference to polities, why did you not criticise the rem nks made three or four weeks ago by the present Secretary of the Republican county committee ? From t: e same rostrum, and to the same society, he took special pains to viliily. for par tisan effect, some of the ablest men in the state. But you see, ’t makes a difference whose bull is gored. W: it lit.lv brain you have is so mixed with the scum of partisan polities that you cannot have, an unbiased judgment A few weeks ago your phlegmatic in tellect, for partisan effect, tried t< abuse the County Superinten lent o* schools, but the Teacher's In.Jitiite set i s seal of condemnation on that attack. Failing there you then tried your boomerang on 'h. “Saph n : Captain,” and n-iw, who will b the next targe:? You have not the good serne nor ability to discuss political questions. The ability, integrity, and sobriety of the candidates on the Dem oeratic ticket you cam ot and dare not assail. You have a store of pai tisan abuse that must out; und so, like a mad dog you snap at ihe fl St thing crossing your path. You are entitled to, and undoubtedly receive tno commiseration of your personal friends, tint who will explain your .de moralized system and apologize' to your readers with whom you have no personal acquaintance? Who will inform them that you are trjing ’-j keep up on soothing syrup, or “Radvzay’s Relief,” and occasionally a little brain food, to keep your “Daniphoolishness” from sending you io an asylum? My enraged friend, keep cool, suppose you do have to support a man not of your choice, for State Senator, and some other officers, when you kuo y the Democracy have abler and b; tier men appointed to them, that gives you no reason to growl if a temperance Democrat happens to say something that you cleim is not Re publican doctrine. Your readers would be better pleased with a discussion of principles, than they are with your scurrilous attack on one wh > has no interest in politic further than to see the right prevail, and the best men elected to office. Honora blv yours. Chas. A. Edm >nds.
THE CHICAGO HARRISON.
Cutter Harrison,Mayor of Chicago, j is an./ther Democratic trump card.) He was nominated for Congress a day I or two ago. He is a much superii r i man to a party by the same name in 1 Indiana, and we ate pleased to state ; bears no relationship to him. Mr. Carter Harrison returned from Europe a few days ago, and wa-i weicom ed home by 30,000 Clncagonesc. A cotemporary gives a sample of the material of the makeup of this princeIv Democrat, as follows: “In the last Presidential election he off-ctu,-illy thwarted a well prepare i scheme of Republican ballot-box stuffing as follows: The number of voting pre cincts in Chicago had been increased in proportion to the rapid increase in the city's voting population, and the Republican dedge was to keep a full force of strikers, re eaters,Ballot-box stutters, and the usual tough /ontingeut around the polling places and thus prevent, thousands of Democratic citizens, by hustling them out of line and by intimidation, from being able to deposit their ballots within the, regulation time, from sunrise un til sunset. Mayor Harrison was duly notified, and immediately issue I a proclamation that every citizen would be accorded the divine right of stiff rage if It took all night, and ordered that the noils remain open so as *to give the woikingmen a chance who coulda’t be on hand during the dayl There was a great Republican how about overturning the governing;,t. Deputy United States Marshals, who made themselves too fr-sh, were promptly replaced by special poii *e men, and the workingmen and Dem o. rats of Chicago voted. In a variety of ways and on numerous occasions has Mayor Harrison stood by the people.*—lndianapolis Sentinel.
