It first appeared as the name of an innkeeper in the -comedy of the “Beaux’ Stratagem,” written by George Farquhar, an English dramatist, m 1(678, who Was’t-he author of sevetal other comedies that were very populjtr-ini. his day. Lady Bountiful, often alluded to, was.another character in the abovenamed play.
