Commissioners' Court. At the special session of the Board of Commissioners of Jasper county, which convened at the court house, in Rensselaer, Tuesday of this week, the following business was transacted: the jail. Bids were received from P. J. Pauly & Bro., of St. Louis, Mo., and from John Chamberlain, of Rensselaer; the bid of the former being, for the building and iron cells, complete, 5i1,655, and,of the latter, for the same, 5i1,776. The bid of P. J. Pauly & Bro., being the lowest, was accepted, and the bond filed, with P. J. Pauly & Bro. as principals and Mordecai F. Chilcote, Ezra C. Nowels, and J. H. Loughridge as suretie. £jThe matter of furnishing heating apparatus for said building was considered, and P. J. Pauly & Bro. furnished plans for the same, which upon examination, I *, were accepted, and the contract for putting in the same was awarded to the same parties for the sum as $lOlB.
George M. Robinson was appointed by the Board to superintend the construction of the jail and sheriff’s residence.
A petition of .Lucius Strong, of Newton township, was presented so the Board, asking that the surplus railroad tax of that township be transferred to the road fund, which was granted. The matter of building a bridge across the Iroquois river, near the .esidence of George W. Burk, was taken up, and bids from N. T. Eldridge and John Chamberlain were received, but the Board considering the bids too high, rejected them, and the bridge will not be built just yet. The contract for building a bridge near the residence of Hoffman Keene, in Jordan township, was awarded to Wm. M. Garey for the sum $187.50, and G. W. Farmer was appointed to superintend the construction of the same. Sheriff Powell was ordered to build a sidewalk along the west side of lot 10 in block 14, in Rensselaer, said lot belonging to Jasper county, and the Auditor was instructed to issue warrant for the cost of the same when completed. The commissioners were each allowed $7.00 and the sheriff $4.00 for services at special session. Board adjourned.
Greenback Convention. Pursuant to published call the central committee of the National Greenback party of Jasper county met at the court house, in Rensselaer, on Saturday, January 28,1882, at 2 o’clock p. m. Meeting was called to order and its object stated by S. W. Ritchey, chairman. J. A. Burnham was elected secretary pro tern., in the absence of R. Ralph secretary.
Ezra C. Nowels, George Bessc, Wm. Washburn, and Peter Foulks were appointed a committee to select names for delegates te the State nominating covention, at Indianapolis, on Februsry 22, 1882. Committee reported and the foL lowing delegates were appointed: Ebenezer Peregrine, David MeCay, Lorenzo Tinkham, James W. McCleary, David H. Yeoman, Geo. Haven, J. A. Burnham, Samuel Ritchey, Jonathan Pancoast, Thos. M. Jones, A. Stinson, J. A. Patton, Basil Hunt, James Orcutt, and B. W. Harrington. The meeting then determined to hold the county nominating convention on the second Saturday in August, 1882, at Rensselaer ; that the basis of representation shall be
three delegates at large from each township and one from each town; that each township and town shall be entitled to one delegate for each five votes cast for Weaver at the last election, and the several townships shall hold elections of delegates to the county nominating convention on the second Saturday of July, 1882.
