An accident occurred on the Springfield and Northwestern railroad, near the Sangamon river, about four miles from Springfield, HL The mail and passenger train fell through a trestle twenty feet to the ground. No one was killed, but fifteen were more or less injured. The Asylum for Idiotic Children at Columbus, Ohio, has been burned. It is believed to have been tho work of incendiaries. Owing to the excellent discipline of the teachers, the pupils were safely marched out, and no lives were lost. The loss of property is about $250,000. At Atlanta, Ga., Gen. J. B. Gordon drove the first spike in the new Georgia Pacific railroad, which will, it is believed, be a great benefit to the whole South. A negro named Augustus Smith suffered execution at Smithfield, N. C., for outraging the person of a white girl 7 years of age. Several thousand colored people assembled at Hamburg, Ark., to witness the execution of Boge Jackson for the murder of Reuben Jordan. Dr. Schluter, supposed to be insane, has been arrested in Germany for threatening to assassinate the Emperor. He was arrested with a six-shooter. , While the treasurer of the Foundling’s Hospital at Moscow was on his way to the Commercial Bank, he was robbed of 800,000 rubles. After Feb. 1, 1882, postal cards will not be redeemed under any circumstances. The tenth census of the United States will be fully completed in a few days. The disbursements for the work of making the cen. sus have been $3,860,068 so far. Congress will be asked for $540,000 additional. The official vote for State Treasurer in Pennsylvania is : Bailey (Republican), 265,295; Noble (Democrat), 258,431 ; Wolfe (Independent), 49,984. Plurality for Bailey, 6,864George Law, a well-known New York capitalist, died last week. Twenty-five firemen were seriously injured while a fire at Hopkinion Mass.
