The Democratic Sentinel OFFICIAL PATK* $f JHMWWIff. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1881
Removal !
The Sentinel Office has been moved into rooms one door east of Makeever’s New Hotel, where we will be pleased to greet our friends in futnre. Let the Democrats organize tie gem tJ, and th n assign Mahone o he tail end of the most unimportant •om mittees as a reward for his treach •ry. A degenerate Moses, the one that was lately carpet-bag Governor of South Carolina, was arrested this week in New York for obtaining money under false pietenses. One of the sad mistakes of Moses, Ingersoll would say. Again Mahone is worried, and tho he has the Republican party of Virginia under his hatches, again he asks; “what is to become of me?”— There is a bare possibility that nobody cares who isn’t dependent uj o i the Virginia senator for his daily brevd.
The general belief is gaining ground that the proceedings against the Star Route thieves are so legally defect* ive that they will be thrown overboard if a trial is ever had. It is probably a case of intent bungling.— The distinguished Star Route thieves nre too big as Republican bosses to suffer harm. It is probable that Conkling be given a place In the Cabinet, un less it is deemed most advisable to appoint Lapham to place, and vacate his| prospective gseat in the Senate to be filled by Conkling through appointment by she Governor. And the half breeds are unhadpy.
Delphi Times: The dead body of a man was found under the Deer Creek Bridge, on Friday, whose name is A. L. Patterson, formerly residing in White county He came to Delphi on the Air-Line train about 11 o’clock in the forenoon, and, it is supposed while bathing his face he fed in con ’ vulsons and was drowned. He was a shoemaker by trade. His coat and hat lay on the bank while his body was found floating in the creek in about feet of water. His remains were inteired by Trustee Jakes, on Saturday evening. Indianapolis Journal: From a reliable source it is loarned that Celonel Yeoman and his party and H. Crawford Friday of last week came to an agreement by which the latter joins hands with the former in the construction of the Indianapolis, Chicago and Northern road. Messrs Moore and Davenport, of Sheridan, and Dr. Pettijohn, Sylvanus Carey and ex-Sher-if? Patty, of Noblesville, were in the city* Friday and were, much elated that . Mr. Crawiord had taken an interest in the enterprise, as they feel confident that the road for which they have been earnestly working for three years past will be built. Going north from Indianapolis the road will pas» through Broad Ripple, Bethlehem, Westfield, Sheridan, Kinkley* then to Franklin and from that point en the Chicago and Indianapolis AirLine to Delphi,
“It our friend of the Sentinel will persist in taking whole columns from The Republican, for his reprint, we must insist upon having credit for thorn.—Republican. If our friends of the Republican desire credit for the orations of the speakers at the Garfield Memorial services, they are not entitled to it.— If our friends desire credit for that portion of the proceedings furnished them, in type, by us, and usedflfl them, they'are not entitled to|it. If they desire credit for the editorial preface to the proceedings, we cheerfully concede it to tnem, as we have no particular desire for responsibility for some extravagant expressions contained therein. So far as “credit" is concerned, on account of use of types, presses,; etc,, we do not think their claim will overbalance ours. Wesho’d not have thought of this, nor introduced it, except to repel the effort of of our friends of the Republican to create the impression that the Sentinel is under everlasting obligations to them. The disposition of the Sentinel is, and has been at all times to extend accommodations and favors without a thought of claiming credit therefor.
Newton Township Items.
Ed. Sentinel: Again Old Newton must be heard from, and about the first thing noticeable is that the continued drouth has .Jven way to continued rains, and that vegetation is putting forth as in the sunny spring time. Pastures are looking fine, and where a few weeks ago cattle were roaming about in quest of food and drink, are now to be found an abundance of g.ass with a bountiful supply of good water. Wheat is looking fine, while a fair acreage has been sown. The corn crop is considerably in excess of what was generally expected and is first class in qualtty. So our farmers should be content in knowing that their harvest is more abundant than tat of many of their brother tillers of the soil. Some of our farmers are hauling their small grain to market for which they g r e getting good returns. Our young friends, David I. Yeoman and Joseph Paxton, are attends ing school at Warsaw, Ind., where they expect to remain until Spring. Quite a number of the lads and a* f»w of the "lasses” attended the Re* • union at Monticello and report a “boss” time. The boys engaged in
soldier duties, for which they receiv- | ed compensation in tie shape of ''hardtack,” “beans” and “sow .” . L W. Savers has moved into his new residence. Mr. W. D. Sayler is prospecting in the “far west” S. B Coen is going west, (as far as Joshua’s.) Dr. Hall is sojourning among the invalids of this and adjoining neighborhoods, and seems to be paying particular attention to one of Uncle Jake’s fair daughters, though not an invalid. Mr. Joseph Price, a former resident of this place, nut now a citizen of Kansas, is hot*» makiner a visit to relatives and i i.>n.is. He reports dry weather and light crops in Neosha county, Kansas. R. J. Yeoman has returned >c »m the southern part of this State, and states that crops of all kinds are almost a failure, and consequently farmers are seeing hard times, with corn to buy at 75 cents per bushel and hay at $25 per ton. The bridge across Curtis creek is completed and is a solid structure. Miss Mattie Sayler is on the sick list but is convalescing. Mr. James Powell, our enterprising well maker, is having unlimited success in making artesian wells. Any one needing a well cannot do better than employ him. Jas. C. Shindler and Jos. Thomas have returned from their western tour. Mr. Thomas expects to locate in Kansas. Jo. we wish you success. Messrs. F. W. Mauck and F. M. Grant are in the “’lasses” Lusiness.— F. W. has a “lass*andF. M “lasses.” No politics in ours.
Union Township Items.
Raining to-day. Wheat and rye look well. Work progressing on the school houaa at blip-Up. The Norm?' opens on the 3d at Brushwood. M. M. Tyler, of Keener, will attend the Normal at Brushwood - Willis McColly starts to-morrow for Delaware county, Indiana, the place of his birth. Union will lose a good citizen, and Delaware gain one. A literary and debating society will be organized at Pleasant Valley, Friday evening. Rev. Abram Miller will preach at the Gant school house next Sunday at 3:30 p. m. Rev. L. Shortridge will lecture at Pleasant Valley next Saturday evening. Subject—Education, ancient and modern, compared and contrast ed. Will Miss Dell G. please call for that lost letter. Walter says its nice to have a young man come to see his sister, so Scott can ride the gray horse after the cows. The Mr. Hon. D. B. Swacklehammer, Esq., thinks we are slightly mistaken about the location of Nubin Ridge, and refers to new maps for 1881. If he has one representing Alter’s mill the back-bone, he is the manufacturer thereof, and it is not therefore correct.
Will Reader plerse define the word dimn?'isernmaqiver for the benefit of those who don’t know its meaning. George Casey has sold twenty tons of hay, to be delivered at Rensselaer, for the handsome sum of $l2O 00. We all enjoyed a good soaking while going home from the Sunday School Reunion kst Sunday evening. Wm Templeton moved his cattle to pasture nearer Rensselaer yesterday. Ad. Parkison removeu his 3-year old cattle to his farms in Barkley last Friday. Jacob M. Troxell has been herding them for a couple of months past. Thanks, Mr. Republican, for stating that we are “a man of power and ability to write” and of “such uncredited renown.” Again comes a dismal howl from the great political ichneumon of Keener (who signs himself Republi can) in an attack upon the “Grape Island man” because we belong to the great party ot Jefferson and Jackson—the party which his ass-tute mind conjures up as ihe “tail end of nothingness ;” the party that elected a President in 1876, and casta majority of the popular vote in 1880. Such a party his imagination conceives to be the “tail-end of nothingness.” In his items to the Republican of Aug. 20th, he says that the “good rain which bespattered the Democrats of Union was just a little shower,” and in the Republican of Sept. 29th, he says “there was no imagination about the good rain which bespattered the Democrats of Union.” Note the contradiction, We shall accept the last statement, knowing it to be correct. „ v GRAPE ISLAND.
