Sitting Bull and liis immediate followers have been loaded upon a steamer and sent off to Standing Rock Agency. The fallen chieftain keeps aloof from all persons. Frank Gilbert and Merrick Rosengronts were hanged at Leadville, Col., the former lor the murder of James McCallom, the latter for the murder of John Lingmeyor. Isaiah Walker, colored, was hanged at Gonzales, Texas, for the murder of his wife. It appears that there are good grounds for believing that the murder of Mr. Pugh, of Cincinnati, was done in Mexioo by a band of Mexicans, and not by Indians, as at first reported and believed. Secretary Kirkwood has ordered an investigation, and it is confidently expected that the murderers will be brought to justice. Mr. White, our Minister to Berlin, has tendered his resignation, to take effect Aug. .15. The Western Union Telegraph Company has “ absorbed ” the Northwestern Telegraph Company of Wisconsin. The transfer, it appears, was made on the Bth of May last. The gauge of the Illinois Central extention to the gulf was changed to the standard width from Cairo to New Orleans. The track is 550 miles long, and 3,000 men completed the task in eleven hours at a cost of $300,000. The Grand Jury at Liverpool has indicted McGrath and McKevitt for attempting to blow up the Town Hall in June. Mr. C. S. Read, an English agricultural expert, said at a recent meeting that the British harvest this year would not be a great one.
The climate of Tunis does not appear to agree with the French troops. Large numbers of them are reported to be dying of malarial fever. At Hammershein, West Prussia, there are nightly demonstrations against the Jews> and considerable Hebrew property has been destroyed by a mob at Boerwald, Pomerania. In spite of a bitter speech against the It ish Land bill by Lord Randolph Churchill, it passed to a third reading in the House of Commons on the 29th ult. by a vote of 220 to 14, and was immediately sent to the House of Lords, where it was read the first time. Postmaster General James has decided that clerk hire in postoffices where the present rato is higher than the sum authorized by law must be reduced. There are 150 offices to which Mr. James’ order will apjjJy.
