Likewise and Also.
Judge Thatcher, who succeeded Mr. Quincy on the bench in Boston, was a man of stern and unbending temper. One of the prisoners, in addressing the court previous to sentence, used the words “ also” and “ likewise ” in a way which implied a difference of meaning. “Do you know of any difference, prisoner, between ‘also* and ‘likewise? asked the Judge. “Yes, your Honor,” replied the criminal. “ Judge Quincy, your predecessor, was patient, kind, courteous and gentlemanly.
