Cornell, Surveyor of the Pert, and $21,906 to the Naval officer. When inquiry was aaade into the matter, in 1874, Noah Davis, the Judge who took occasion recently to lecture a gentleman from the Bench on ideas of personal honor, was forced to testify that he was present and assisted in patching up the matter whereby his client benefltted so materially—his client being the infamous Jayne—and that among the persons present and aiding in effecting the profitable compromise was Roscoe Conkling.
