Several South Bend capitalists haveformed a company for the construction of a street railway. A drug clerk of Vincennes took alight into a cellar to draw some spirits of nitre from a carboy, and liis head is now swathed in bandages. The family residence of Holly Austin, eighteen rooms, with contents, three miles northwest of Madison, burned recently. Loss, $4,500; insurance, $2,500. There have been 179 car-loads of watermelons shipped from Vallonia, Jackson county, this season, the largest number ever shipped in any one season. Mr. Allen Nichols, a resident of Lawrence county, ran into his house near Fayetteville, speechless, and remained so until next morning, when he died. Jeffrrson Davis, of Windfall, Tipton county, while hauling logs near that place, passed oil a small bridge, which broke down, precipitating the logon Mr. Davis, killing him instantly. A little daughter of Charles Lair, of Connersville, was relieved of an alleged catarrh by the extraction of a locust pad ail inch long from her nostril, where it had resided for a year. A son of William Franklin, of Olay township, Owen county, was buried ten days ago. Since then another son and a daughter have died, and two other daughters are not expected to live. The death of each seems to be from natural causes, but no two alike. A gang of pickpockets surrounded Mrs. Wm. McLane, at the Montgomery County Fair, aud snatched her fine gold watch.' She, being a large, muscular lady, held fast to the leader of the mob and procured his arrest. The watch, however, was not recovered. A shooting-match for a beef was being held at the farm-house of a Mr. Meridias, at Maxville, Greene county, when a young man by the name of Newton shot a little girl who passed in front of his aim, the rifle-ball penetrating her bowels, killing lier almost instantly. The official programme for laying the corner-stone of the new State House on the 28th is published. The introductory address will be by Commissioner Thomas A. Morris ; oration by Gov. Hendricks; original poem by Mrs. Sarah T. Bolton ; laying of tlie stone by Gov. Williams, and benediction by Bishop Talbott. Fire was discovered in the rear of John Harper’s restaurant, at Marion, the other night, which was soon destroyed. The lire spread to F. M. Holmes’ hardware store, and a three-story brick building, adjoining, destroying the hardware store, and greatly damaging the brick building. Total loss, $6,000 ; insured for $4,000. It is not known how the fire originated. Father Blake, a traveling evangelist, was adjudged insane at Greensburg last week, and the court ordered that a guardian should be selected. The eccentric old gentleman is wealthy, highly educated, and spends his lime driving over the country, painting scriptural injunctions and advice upon fences, unused walls, and mother ways calling the attention of the ungodly to the great cause he espouses. A CIRCUS elephant being transported over one of the Indiana railroads, the .other day, in a car next to the tender, became thirsty, and exhausted tlie locomotive’s supply, compelling the engineer to stop and fill up again. The engineer did not submit tp fate until the elephant had opened his trunk and fired several bucketfuls of water at him. A young lady of Rushville was taken quite ill a few days ago, and since that time has passed into a peculiar state. When spoken to she stares at you and seems to partially recognize you, but her pallid and careworn look' is one of the most expressive ever seen. When food is placed before her she refuses to eat while anyone is near her, but when alone she will eat as hearty a meal as she ever did ; she will read and enjoy herself seemingly as contented as she ever did, if no one is in the room to attract lny attention.
