Opposition.

They say ‘‘opposition is the life of trade. ’ At least it proved true in regard to the daneo last Friday evening, as it was one of the grandest successes of the season. The opposition was edinposed of a few gentlemen and the same number of ladies who said they.intended to ‘‘fight the dance until hell froze over.” Their reasons were so numerous that it would be impossible to state them, and were more frivolous than numerous ; and from the nnieunt of public sentiment there is against them I think they will retire from the field, and will not attempt the journey on ice until the weather gets cooler. Would it not been better for them, it they (lid not wish tR attend the dance, to have stayed at home, kept their mouths shut, and saved their credit ? 0. SIn announcing the features for the entertainment which came off on Tuesday evening last, it was said the presidential question would be settled then aud there. Well, the Hancock cake received the highest number of votes, and it also, brought a considerably higher price. As an omen gone out from this, for many, many year, radical-ridden locality, it is certainly very encouraging. The entertainment was a success.

Our old friend, W. Scott Hardy, of Monticello, called to see U 3 Wednesday. Ho is engaged in the introduc tion of Prof. C. S. Rice’s National Mnsfc Chart. He lias placed the agency for this locality in charge of Miss Ralph. Fine fowls at a sacrifice.
