The Audiphoue-How It Works.
Mr. Cox, the agent for the new instrument called the audiphone, explained its workings to a Sentinel reporter. It is astonishing that it has only been invented so recently. It consists of a sheet of carbonized rubber about 8| by 10 inches in size, to which is attached a handle. From the top of the fan extends a couple of cords which are brought down and held by a small fastener in the handle. By this the tension can be increased or diminished at pleasure. The edge of t ie fan is placed between the teeth, or allowed to rest on them, and the sound of a voice from in froi t passes over the fan to the tee.h, nd from thence to the auditory nerve, thence through the banes of the face. A deaf and dumb person can hear by means of this simple instrument, and of conrse can learn to speak. It will do away with the necessity for the asylums over the country for such unfortunates. For the worst cases thete is an additional sheet of a smaller size placed on the under side of the instrumentto assist in conveying back to them the sound of their own voices. The experiments made at the Asylum on Sunday, were highly satisfactory to all parties. The cost of the audiphone is $lO for the simple, and sls for the compound.—ludianapolis Sentinel. —While our exchanges are boasting of their mammoth vegetables it may be well for them to record the fact that White county has a radish measuring five feet in length and three feet in girth, one head of oats five feet in length corn weighing 150 pounds to the bushel, and stranger still, a turnipseed weighing over 100 pounds.— They all belong to the animal kingdom, however, and begin their names with capital letters.—[Monticello Herald. —An exchange says some business men never spend a cent for advertising, either in the newspapers or any other way. In the stores of such men are generally seen old barrel heads, on which are inscribed in chalk or charcoal such devices as these: “Flower, Korn Meel, Pertatoes, Pourk. Cheze, Kaliker. Kountry produce bawt and sould, goods cheap for cash, Tee, Shugar, etc.’’—[Waynetown Banner.
DELPHI AND INDIANA POLIS.
The work of procuring the right of way and subsidies for this line is progressing encouragingly. On Tuesday the township of Adams, in Hamilton county, voted a two per cent, tnx by a majority of forty-five. There are yet four townships on the road to vote, and the friends of the “"line feel confident that no difficulty will be'encountered. [Delphi Tinies. —Talk about hard times! Why, bless your eyes, don’t you see more horses and buggies, and phaetons, and sulkies, and spring wagons, and hacks than ever before? Everybody is on wheels trying to throw dust on their neighbors by having the fastest horse, and lots of people are visiting remote expositions and fairs, all well dressed and with money enough to get home on. Hard times use! to look different from this. Hani timesis a thing of the past.—[Lafayette Journal. —A Memphis letter has tbe following in relation to the manner of death by yellow fever: “Many die easily, go calmly off to sleep, hardly having strength to raise the eyelids, but too many die a horrible death I’lie struggl i is terrible. They h ive to be held down to bed until the last gasp, und the scene after death is 100 horrible for de-
seription. Another peculiarity of is is when the patient is in a state of delirium and is prevented from getting out of bed. Often be makes a desperate effort to bite those holding h'm. I have a lively reeol lection of thus having to exert all my strength to hold a yellow fever patient in bed aud keep him from biting me in the face. When he recovered his reason he wept with linger at not, being able to get up, but at last said: “Hello! is that you? Let us lie down on the pillow and go to sleep.’’ I was glad to do so. Entire families have been swept away. When the fever once enters a dwelling it seems almost impossible for any member of the family to escape. The dirtiest people often escape, and the cleanliest are often stricken do«n.’’
O. B. Mclntire, Banker and Real Estate Agent, Remington, has several choice and desirable town and country properties to dispose of on reasonable terms. He offers great bargains. The farmers of Jasper county arc' hereby informed that R D. Roberts, of Crystal Flouring Mills, Monticello, will exchange Flour for Wheat, and transfer same from and to depot at Monticello without charge. For browned Coffee, plug Tobacco, canned Fruits, Apricots, green Gages, Peaches, canned Salmon, fine cut Tobacco 50c. per lb., Cigars, Rueensware and Gfassware, silver-plated Knives, Forks and Spoons, table and pocket Cutlery, Japan, Young Hyson, Oolong, Imperial and Gunpowder Teas, Maltby’s Prepared Cocoa, etc., etc., go to Charley Starr’s. He keeps them in greater quantity and variety and at lower ii tires than elsewhere. Tinware, lowest in price, ever off ered in Rensselaer, at Clark’s, Nowels hai building.
We understand Mr. Peacock, now of the City Hotel, is meeting with warm approval. He is untiring in his efforts to make it a pleasant home for his guests. There is a good reason why A. Leopold can sell Clothing lower than any other Clothing house in Rensselaer. It is because he took advantage of the recent decline in price of goods, and purchased his full -Took at 15 per cent, les than they can be bought for now. Ezra L. (.’lark is established in the Nowels building with an extensive and entirely new stock of hare ware, of all kinds, tinware, table and pocket cuttlery, etc., etc., to which he respectfully invites the attention of the public. Dr. A. H. Wirt, dentist, is in town, and will remain a short time. He will be happy to meet all desiring his professional services, at the law office of D. B. Miller, Esq., over the Narrow Gauge Clothing House. Mrs. J. M. Hopkins is prepar'd to do stamping for Ladies’ needle-work. All work warranted. Call and s>ee patterns.
