The judge, jury, lawyers, and witnesses wen. into the yard of the court-house, where the ceremony was conducted by a Chinese priest. Wooden tapers or joss sticks were stuck into the ground and lighted. The oath written in Chinese characters on yellow paper was read aloud by *very witness, after which each steppod solemnly over the burning sticks, and the priest cut off the head of a chicken.
