What’s In a Name? There is a good deal in a jxatac in North Carolina politics. At the re cent State election Northampton county went Democratic; it had previously given republican majorities of from 700 to 1,000 in polls of from 2,500 to 3,000 votes. The republicans in the adjoining counties made gains, but Northampton elected James W. Grant, Dem., by 133. There was stupefaction for a while till the truth came out, as follows: On election day, just previous to the opening of the polls, a man called upon the colored voters and addressed them substantially as follows: “Fellow citizens: I come toaddress you this morning as to the man you shall vete for. I shall say but a few words, and these will be especially directed to you colored people. Who gave you your liberties?” “Grant! Grant! General Grant!” rent the air.

I is for Grant every time. I is!” was the almost ui animons response. The thunderstruck republican fuglemen were too dazed at the audacity of the spokesman amt its success to interfere in season, and “Grant” • swept the county. A Ac ondwrxul Flower. The venerable Thurlow Weed, on Wednesday week gathered some news paper reporters at ids palatial mansion to witness th - blooming of one of the rarest flowers in the world, the Flower, or Spiritss Sanctus, of Brazil. The flower is rare, even in its native land. The stalk is about forty inches in height, with a leaf like that of a tuberose. On the top of rhe one at Mr. Weed's home are four of the flowers, the lowest of which is in full I’o im, the three others in bud. The flower in bloom is small and of the exquisite cream color, its perfume is delicate. It is similar in shape and size to a 51 ideira nut opened but still joined. One-half of the flower remains upright, and the other half lies down exactly at right angles to its mate, exposing in the erect part a most dainly floral grotto, in which rests, apparently upon a perch, a petal shaped like a dove about to fly, with outstretched head aud extended wings. The dove is cream white, with the exception of the upper extremities of tne wings, which are beautifully speckled. The perfection ami life-like appearance oi the dove are incredible to persons who have not seen the flower.
