Mechanics’ Temperance Movement.
The following is the pledge of the Mechanics’ Temperance .Movement: We, the undersigned, hereby pledge that which seems most dear to us, to-wit, our most sacred honor, that we will abstain from the use of all intoxicating liquors or drinks, ns a beverage for the space or term of one year from the 18th day of June, A. 1). 1878; we further pledge ourselvei to assist in enforcing the penalty to this pledge, if any member violates the same; we further agree to abide by and enforce the following penalty, should we or either of us violate the above pledge, to-wit: Any brother violating the above pledge shall forfeit the sum of one dollar to each and every brother remaining steadfast to the pledge; and any brother so failing, shall upon due examination and proof of such violation, be publicly ducked, by the other members hereof, or any of them, in any stream of water that may be convenient, and he shall be publicly exposed for such violation of his pledge, iu the public newspapers of the town of Rensselaer, Indiana. The objects of this movement are to promote morality aud tiealth, and to evade penury and want. The*badge is a neat strip of red ribbon, about three-quarters of an inch in width, with the initials M. T. M. printed thereon, and is worn on the left lapel of the coat or vest, A special invitation is extended to the ladies to call and examine the stock of Dress Goods just received at Leopold’s. They are the handsomest iu the market, aud sold very tow for cash.
