A JOLLY SUCCESS B. P. 0. E. No. 993 Duly Instituted Blaffion Elks Do Their Work Well.— An Enjoyable Banquet Follows the Decree Work.
The entire proceedings are over. tn d Decatur lodge No. 9V3, of B p O. E. i» now an established orand ia classed among the beat )»eople on earth. The event was a great one for Decatur, ai d especially tboae who took the work, and will no doubt be remem bered the longest day they live. The Bluffton team, which conferred the work are up to date in every respect and worked upon each can didate with a vigor that was sur prising even to the mem Dera of their own oganization, and many were the expressions that Decatur was getting all that was coming to; them The entire afternoon was taken up with the degree work and at six o’clock an adjournment' was taken until seven thirty to allow the team to catch their second wind and rest up for the closing event At exactly the hour lodge was declared in working order and the degree work was conferred upon three members who bad been reserved. Immediately following this the entire class was given the obligation and made confirmed metnliere of the B P. O. E The work of installing the local officers was then carried out and the following men were given the oath of office and will conduct the workings of the local order hereafter:! H L Confer, exalted ruler; A P Beatty, esteemed leading knight; James T. Merryman, esteemed lec taring knight; D E Smith, esteemed loyal knight; C. O. France, secretary; E X. Ehinger, treasurer; C C Ernst, tyler; Shaffer Petereon, chaplain and W. P. Schrock, L A Graham and H J. Yager, trustees Different members of the local lodge were then called upon for addresses, and each officer was made to respond at the mention of his name. Several out of town guests were also called and responded with a will. All the work then before the lodge having been completed, District Deputy Charles Sturgis of Bluffton, who succeeded District Deputy Donohue of South Bend, then declared the Decatur lodge installed and wished the same much success. An adjournment was then taken to the Studabaker building, where a banquet was served, fully two hundred and fifty of the best |M»ople on earth being seated. Music was furnished by the Variety Mandolin club, dur ing the progress of the meal, after which Photographer J. E Moser took a flash light picture of the banquet hall and those seated. Toasts were then in erder and nearly every Elk present was called upon to make some remarks, the most prominent being those of Congressman George W. Cromer, Judge R. K. Etwin, District Deputy Charles Sturgis, Exalted Ruler Alder of Fort Wayne lodje, Anthony Holthouse of Jonesboro, Arkansas: Exalted Ruler Confer, E. B Edmunds of Bluffton, Mr. "’hitkbe of Fort Wayne, Mr. Con«ay of Huntington, Dr. Fulton, of Bluffton; J. H. White, of Goshe n; anu others too numerous to mention Cigars were then passed among the guests, and as the town ’’lock struck the hour of twelve the banquet adjourned, and the institution of the Decatur lodge 993 of the B P. O. E. was over. Good fellowgbip prevailed throughout the day, and the occasion will long be re mambsred by those who partio ■ ipated.

BIRTHDAY PARTY Given for Miss Marie Gass Last Evening Marie Gass, little daughter of Mr. and Mrs Frank Gass, oelebratcd her twelfth birthday yesterday, and tn honor of the occasion a surprise was perpetrated upon her. Marie was pre sented with a beautiful gold'chain and cross by her guests.
CRIMINAL CASES Two Filed in Circuit Court Today John Hudson Charged with Stealing and Jacob Augsberger with Provoke. Harvey Sprague. the barber, this morning tiled an affidavit and information with Prosecutor John C Moran, charging one John Hudson with stealing eight dollars m cash from Randall Sprague last night. A bench warrant for Hudson s arrest was issued at once, and he will have to answer a charge of larceny Randall Sprague is Hudson's step father and the theft was committed at the old man's house
Noah Beberstine filed an affidavit in circuit court this morning, charging Jacob Augsberger with provoke. According to the papers, the affair, which causes the law suit is an old one, having occurred July 22, 1904, and the complaint fails to say just why it has been stirred up after so long a sleep. However, this is probably no one's business, and the trial will be forthcoming in due course of time no doubt.
FAMILY REUNION Gays Meet in Annual Picnic at Steele's Park. The Gay family held their annual reunion at Steele's park today, and everyone present had a most enjoyable time. The Gays awl those related to the Gay family were there from far and near, and were all sizes ami ages. The relatives com menced to gather at the park early in the day and at noon one of the largest crowds in the history of this family's reunion was present. At twelve o'clock all were seated at u long table, which was loaded with good things, and for one hour they ate. Indianapolis, Sept. 7—lt has been decided to stsrt a binder twine factory at the sttae prison at Michigan City to cost #30,000 and employ 100 men. It is an experiment, and if it proves successful other industries will be started by the state. No industrv will be started, however, to compete with Indiana industries.

WINS PREMIUMS Carl Moser’s Herd of Berkshires the Best in the Country. Carl Moses, whose success in showing his herd of Berkshire hogs has been reported, continues to add laurels to his list at the lowa State fair. Last week he showed against seven herds cf Berkshires and won seventeen first prizes. Competing against over 3,000 hogs he won the championship and sweepstake pre miums over all. Adams couutv is certainly proud of her stock record. Carl is showing his herd at Lincoln, Nebraska, this week.
BADE FAREWELL Bishop Aldermg Leaves for Visit to the Pope at Rome. Bishop Herman J Alerdtng of the Fort Wayne diocese, left this afternoon for New York, from whete he sails Saturday on the steamer Genoa for Rome, where he will make his five years’ report to the pope. He will be absenfabout two months Last evening he was surprised at his Fort Wayne home by many of his people, awl the entire Fort Wayne clergy, who exiled to wish him Godspeed and hope for his safe return The Very Rev. THE BOARD Commissioners to Hold Session Tomorrow The Fax Levy Adjusted by the County Council and Soard of Commissioners. The board of commissioners before adjournment appointed Dr. price being #l5O a year. T. HErnst was re appointed janitor at the court house for a period of two years, at #720 a year. The board fixed the levy for the payment of macadam road bonds, and fixed that of Root township at four cents on the one hundred dol lars valuation.; fifteen cents in Preble; forty-three in Kirkland; sixty-seven cents in Washington; fifty-nine cents in St. Marys; fifty cents in Monroe and Berne; seventy-hve cents in Blue Creek; forty-eight cents in Wabash and Geneva; thirty two cents in Jefferson ; The levy for macadam road repair was fixed at eight cents on the one hundred dollars valuation. The board will hold a session tomorrow to take up several of the French township gravel road extension petitions, which have been filed since the road was voted there a few weeks ago. The county council fixed the levy for county purposes at thirty-eight and one-fourth on each one hun dred dollars valuation, and seven cents for the county sinking fund. DOUBLE SURPRISE Given for Misses Harriet Fetzer and Bertha Buhler. It was a happy crowd of young people that gathered at the home of Mrs. John A. Fetzer, on Ninth street, last evening. The occasion was a masked surprise party, given by Mrs. Fetzer and Mrs. Chester Buhler, in honor of the fifteenth birthday anniversary of their daughters, Miss Harriett Fetzer and Miss Bertha Buhiler. Games and other amusements were indulged m and a dainty three course luncheon was served. At a late hour the young people left for their homes, voting their hostesses delightful entertainers, and wishing them many repetitions of this most enjoyable event.

Miller reoeved a letter this morning from Kirkland township citizens stating that some one was permitting a herd of diseased cattle to run at large along the highway. The cattle seem to be afflicted with pink eye or some other dangerous and contagious disease, thus exposing ler immediately consulted County Attorney Lutz and Health Officer J, M. Miller. The latter accompanied by a veterinary surgeon to examine th® cattle. If this condition is found as reported the State Veterinary will be immediately notified and it will then be his duty to come and examine the cattle and take some action. He even has the power and right to kill such stock if he deems it necessary for the safety of other stock. The case is a new one in this county, and will be watched with interest.
