She iiuule him perfectly devoted to her all the time he was there, yet when he naki-d her to marry him she laughed lu his face. Lord Rnlcnrrea was extremely crestfallen, but when he went away he made a will settling everything he could upon Miss Dnlrytnple. Somehow she heard of thia, anil said: "Then, after all, he must really ears for me. and I will marry him." And she did. He was fifty-eight theu, but they had tell children
Wlm M. P.'s. It need hardly be pointed out. says the author of "Fifty Years In Fleet Street," that to lie elected a member of parliament Coes not necessarily imply intellectual superiority. Shortly after the Burmese war a young civilian, home ou leave, happened to mention Burma. "Ah, yes. Burma," said an M. P, with whom he was sitting at table. "I had a nephew- who was la Burma, only he use,! to call it Bermuda." On another occasion, in the month of March, some one said to Mr. Livcxey: "This is a iTuel east wind." “Yes." was the would lie witty reply. "1 expei-t It will be Easter before it Is over." Tills was repeated by the author of the book qtiot <1 to a H-pectd member of parliament, who observed gravely; “I fancy 1- s right. I have known it last till Eaiter and longer yet.” A l.ts««ow < rmetery. The Necropolis cemetery. Glasgow, as originally planned, contained almost exactly twenty-four acres available f>r burials, an i it was suggested that each division of one acre should be uaraed after a letter of th? Greek alphabet w'.ii-h cm'ains twenty-four characters. Lor vari >.is reasons thia idea has not been fully carried out, but fifteen sect: >js of the cemetery have been so named fr >ni alpha to omega, the monosyllable letters between these being omitted The names have not been applied in any partie ular sequence, but with the aid of a small map they are useful in locating any particular spot In what is now omof the most densely filled graveyards In the kingdom. Xot a Mr»»rn«er Roy. A tieggar accosted a man on the street the other day and poured out a tale of woe. to which th- gentleman patiently listened. Then be took out a card bearing his name, which was that of a well known philanthropist who contributes largely to an organization working for the relief of the poor. This he banded to the man after writing an introductory note thereon. The beggar turned away with disgust written on his face and the parting remark: “Say, d’ye t'ink I got time to beat it up to dat joint? I'm too busy workin’ dis pike to waste me time dat way. Wot d’ye t'ink I am—a messenger boy Y’— New York Times. Matter Indratrvrtlble. An essential property of matter, but which does not commend itself to superficial observation, like those of extension and resistance, is indestructibility. So far as experiment and observation can discover matter can neither be created nor destroyed. On the surface facts seem to contradict this assertion, for any particular portion of matter may he decomposed and resolved Into its constituent parts so that it seems to have disappeared, because the form under which we knew it is no longer present. In reality, however, no diminution in tlie quantity of existing matter has taken place. One proof of this is easily afforded by combustion. If we allow a piece of wood or coal or any combustible solid body to "burn away ’’ there will, as we all know, be asl.es remaining. If while the combustion Is going on we take means to pre serve not only the ashes, but also every part of the body which would ordinarily be dissipated, ns smoke ami steam, and then weigh all the different substances, solid, liquid or gaseous, that we have obtained, we shall find the combined weights equal to the original weight of the body itself.
The Pillory In Enirlnnd. It is difficult to realize that as late as June 2'l, 1830, so barbarous a punishment as that of the pillory was still Inflicted. One Peter James Bossy stood In the pillory in the Old Bailey on thut day for perjury and was the last of a long line of victims, for It was abolished Immediately afterward. Originally, like most mediaeval punishment, It was intended more as a disgrace than as a bodily discomfort, but a crowd that would watqh all night to gloat over a public hanging in the morning naturally did not spare the ■■♦ictims of the pillory, who sometimes died from the treatment they received. Mere humane was the punishment for perjury In 14fJS, when the offenders were merely sentenced to ride from Newgate to C'ornhill with paper miters on their treads. But they knew a thing or two in the middle nges, and no doubt there was a street boy even tn 1408.—London Chronicle. Klison—Gayiord’a wife used to be awfully stout, and now she is quite thin.- What caused the change. I wonder? Marlow-Divorce. This isn’t the same wife.—Titvu and Countrv.
